I've always moaned about my 300TDI Defender having a noisy engine (clack, clack, clacking), even though most people think it's ok! (I've had 200's and 300's previously)
However, twice in a row it has been normal noisy in the morning on a 12 mile run (6mile, 1 hour stop, 6mile), but then when I've started it in the evening after around 5 hours, it sounded much quieter!
Next morning back to the clacking - any ideas please?
Steve

As above, renew oil with good quality 10W40 and check valve clearances + cambelt and pulleys if time to change. Near all engines are slightly noisier on start up...by design, Land Rover lumps are inherently noisy...it's part of their character:cool:

How many miles has your engine covered...?

Thanks everyone, cambelts fairly new and I’ve checked/reset tappets, so I’ll give her an oil change with some good 10/40

l had this issue on a classic car with a six cylinder engine and it was the oil feed to the camshaft that was blocked.
