hi broke down tonight 04 td4
started after work & batt light came on, drove about 6 miles & all the dash lights came on and lost accelerator. AA caame out jump started then hit the alternator with a bar & batt light went out. drove 8 miles home now battery is fully charged AA man said it would be the bushes also lot of oil on alternator so he said that may cause it. can i clean the oil off the unit and change the bushes & how do i cure the oil comming from dip stick thanks in advance

Hi , change the crankcase breather filter asap , better still fit the BMW mod , if not done will be the most likely cause of oil from the dipstick !

I agree that you must change to the BMW cyclone filter / oil separator asap.
The best £23 you will ever spend.

Your alternator may not be a total loss. You may not need to fit new brushes.

Lidl to the rescue.

Spray on Lidl's W5 Multi-Purpose Degreaser (the one in the orange spray bottle) leave it a few minutes and rinse off. Start the engine immediately after the rinse and run for 5mins to dry out the innards. You may have to repeat degreasing a few times.

This is an emergency clean-up. The oil will have glazed the rotor. It will wear off quite quickly but if you don't get rid of the oil it will creep back and happen again. The worst case scenario is it may catch alight.

Hi Geordielad,

Just read your first post again and I have to alert you to the fact that your battery may well NOT be fully charged after only 8 miles.

I reckon it would take over an hour of running to be sure of starting tomorrow morning when the engine and the oil is stone cold. :(

If you have a battery charger I would give it a trickle charge all night if possible.

Good luck.

Singvogel. :D
