hi,i have a p38 that has had a mitsubishi 2.8 shogun engine installed.few days ago the alternator drive belt came off and was partially shredded which obviously brought up no charge and stopped the rev counter from working, the speedo also messed up.found and fitted a new belt and the alternator was apparently charging again but on the next journey it stopped and rev counter and speedo failed.this was only for a short time and all came back online although intermittently.the vehicle was then parked for a few hours and when i returned to it the battery was completely dead.i jump started the motor and drove the short distanc eto home with no charge light on and rev counter not working.i have purchased a brand new alternator for the mitsi engine and also a brand new battery but cannot get a charge.a mechanic has tried everything from chasing new wires to having the alternator checked but nothing works,he has noted that i have one live wire at the ignition barrel while the ignition is on but i have three when the ignition is off, this could be where the battery drain is but doesnt explain the alternator fault.can anyone shed anymore light on this please?does anyone have a range rover p38 with a mitsi 2.8 that could help with a wiring diagram?

I do recall on a jap car I fiddled with many years ago that the diode pack and other chargey type stuff was not on the back of the alternater but in a separate box mounted elsewhere.
Is yours like this?

no its a self contained unit, diodes and all are inside the casing,it has been back to the supplier and computer checked and they say it is all a ok.that being the case then i must have a wiring problem in the conversion ,something that has been ok for about three years but has now popped up causing no end of grief.daft thing is i have battery voltage at the main teminal of the alternator, battery voltage at the exciter terminal and about 1.5 volts at the warning light terminal.surely it should work?

tacho flicking around was the first sign of alternator failure on my Classic. followed by speedo, then abs as the charging system failed and it started to suck remaining life out of the battery. Battery light never came on during the whole debacle. You could have a dead battery halfords (other suppliers of tacky stick on crap are available) to do a drop test on it. Or get a multimeter across the battery terminals when running and hope for 14.something volts

did have a dead battery and it killed the alternator but now have brand new alternator and battery but am told the becm is the reason for all the faults and it has most likely caused a major fault in the main computer, they tell me i need a complete dash-becm-main computer and door locks, keys and ignition to rectify the problem]
