hi folks!

just out of interest, if you had the choice, and EVER got fed up with RR, what would you go for?

i have tried to include what i think are decent 4x4's for around 5k.

just for fun, you can bash any choice as you wish :)

That's a Tough question! It will really depends on what you are planning to do with it.

Personally if I want to drive my family around without having to play in the mud, I had a very good time when testing the latest Touareg, Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. They are, at least in Japan, the best when it comes to price/comfort ratio.

For a mix of Off road and traveling around I will take without hesitation the Toyota FJ Cruiser or the Mitsubishi Pajero. The only problem I had with the FJ Cruiser during my week test drive is when it comes to carry people around and shop with it, its door design is less than enjoyable... A bit like the RX8 actually.

I like Pajero/Shoguns a lot. They need to sort out a way of getting you from the house to the driving seat without having to see their externals because they are uglier than ugly pigs. Apart from that I'd have one.

@spacepig, the wife works for MMC here in Caracas, so we had chance to try the Santa Fe and the Montero (as it is here) in the sand dunes. the Mitsi got stuck and I managed to get the SF all the way up with a heavy right foot :)

i Like the newer style SF MY2006, and you can get 1 for just under 5k now on a 05 plate.
Jeeps i see everyday and have grown tired of them.
BMW for me is a good road car, but not off road.
Mitsi fairly good, but have been told expensive to repair when they go wrong. (£750+ for discs and pads all round)

I would have one too if only they could redesign the interior (Ugly like hell) remove the step thingy under the side skirt, and, only in japan and mandatory, remove this ugly tiny little side mirror (see here Screen Shot 2012-05-25 at 10.41.27 AM.png).

Anyway the Pajero is long overdue for a redesign so I hope they will finally do something for the interior.

To be honest I never tried the Pajero in the sand only in heavy mud, mountain landscape, Snow and River crossing... It did amazingly well each time but indeed you need to be heavy on the right foot.

Personally I will NEVER, EVER get a BWM BENZ or Cayenne 4x4... Tested all and each and any single time I have been stuck with them... For me a 4x4 is a car that will pull me of any situation whatsoever! I would prefer a real sedan that these fake 4x4...

I bought a Range Rover Because my preferred alternative, a Toyota Land Cruiser would have cost £12K plus for a 12 year old example against less than £5K for an 8 year old P38. I also liked the fact that all the info needed to maintain the P38 was available and the parts are dirt cheap. It keeps rolling but needs constant attention due to the poor quality of so many of the parts.
 
As some might remember my signature used to show me owning 2 Rangie's and 2 Cherokee's. No surprise my next preferred car to a Rangie is the Cherokee. I have to add that I mean the the old XJ model and not the new thing which should have been put down at birth. Same goes with all the other Jeep models. I like XJ's and that is it.
I bought my first XJ in 2000 for similar reasons to Datatek - I wanted a classic RR but could find one at the right price. It needed to be LHD as i intended to bring it to Sweden. It's been there ever since including 3 yrs ago when the temp dropped to -46°c. It has never let me down yet. Parts are dirt cheap so long as you don't buy them in Sweden. Since then I have owned 3 of them. They are solid, reliable, stylish, good off road but not pretty on the inside and not comfortable. As i have said before there is nothing like a Cherokee to make you appriciate a Range Rover.

We are now in California and I am looking for a good P38. Prices here are a little cheaper than the UK so I have my eye on a post 2000 model. Again I am a bit single minded with Landrovers, I like the P38 and that is it. The new shape is grotesque so i won't be having one of them. The wife who also drove a P38 in the UK has just bought a Navigator. 5.4l V8. Goes like stink but doesn't have the luxury of the P38.

I personally bought mine coz I can't afford the £87k they are asking for an MKIII ;-)
 
Datatek just said what was on my mind. Land Cruiser (100 series, not the pussywagon 90 / Prado) would be my first choice, but 15k EUR against 4k EUR for the same year / same mileage car was (and still is) a no brainer to me.

Other than that, i'd maybe have a 4Runner or Hi-Lux.

as Datatek said, the P38 is cheaper than others and it appears you get a lot more for your money. Shoguns/Pajero are the choice of the wife, only cuz she works for them at the mo :)

Landcruisers to me are ugly looking things, ane the FJ needs hiding away from the public :)

i dont think you will find a nicer looking 4x4 than the P38 for under 5k, and if everyone cared for their cars as they should, there should be minimal probs.

thank god we have such a varied wealth of experience and knowledge on this wonderful site.
