i've got my engine boxed back up and everything sorted at long last but am having some bother getting the timing right.
i've had a play with moving the distributer about and finding the best spot at idiling speed and then checked with a strobe light and found the timing mark is miles off from the indicator! when i line the indicator up by moving the distrubuter around the engine struggles and sounds gash.

from what i've read in the manual the engine should be run at a set speed (800rpm) while setting this up but i aint got a rev counter so i cant measure it!! i set the idiling speed by adjusting a screw on the bottom of the carb until the engine ran smooth.

i gave it a run with the vauge timing set up and got a fair bit of what i think is 'pinking' when going up hills and still sounds like its blowing raspberries oot the exhaust!

any one got any tips/advice? going to keep playin with the distributer untill i get rid of the pinking noise a see how she goes then......

yup, yer goin the right way, there no better way to set the timing than the ear, keep going yer'll get it in the end

turn yer dizzy abit anti-clockwise then slowly turn it clockwise till the engine just starts to pick up speed. ignore the timing marks except fer getting a start point.

Make sure the wee vacuum pipe from the capsule on the distributor is connected to the doofah on the carburettor else the whole ignition timing plan goes down the drain.

Pinking can put holes in pistons, and running with the timing badly retarded will cause serious overheating. Needs to be more or less OK to be safe.

well so far it appears ok, not overheated or blown itself to bits yet!

it all seams too easy....... got that feeling that somethings going to go horribly wrong.......again......

i've been running around in me red beast for a few days now and think i've got the timing set up as good as i can get it. i managed get it to line up with the timing marks at idling speed (it was maybe 20º out when i started) by setting the mixture screw on the carb. i've ended up setting it to the 6º mark at idling speed as it says in me manwell as any more and it didnt sound good at higher rev's.

so its all sounding good as i'm zoomin about but when i slow down and take my foot off the accelerator it makes a lot of puffing/chuffing noises from the exhaust, like a muffled missfire kind of noise. it does sound like every other old landrover engine noise to be fair but is there anything i can do to stop it?

if it were a subaru impretza wi a huge exhaust it might sound kind of cool but as its a landrover and i have acute imminent doom paranoia i'm obviously thinking its up to nay good!!
