Good morning all,
Two days ago I was forced to drive over a water filled Pothole by a large truck that came around a corner over my side of the road and left me no where else to go. I was braking when I hit the pothole at just under 20mph with both nearside front and rear wheels. What I want to know is would that have done much damage. It drives the same and I can"t see any damage to the wheels but maybe there could be an invisible crack in one or both of them so is there any way of checking them without going to a specialist?

I would expect most of the force would be taken by the tyre. Under inflated tyres or low profile tyres transfer some of the impact to the wheel. If the tyre isn't damaged I don't think the wheel will be either.

It's unlikely to damage the alloy. You could lift the whole side and spin the wheels, to see if there is any run-out, but it's unlikely.

Had you been running something with low profile tyres then you might have cause for concern, but a freelander has a reasonable amount of sidewall which should have protected the rim.

Have had it checked and the wheel is ok, so thanks everyone.
Will be ordering 4 new tyres monday and still haven"t decided which to buy. I want to keep the price below £80 per tyre if I can. Any suggestions, I was going to get Westlake but have now changed my mind.

I can't remember what I had on mine but they were mid range price wise and the total for all four fitted and balanced was a tad under £400. You get what you pay for with tyres don't be tempted to get the cheapest.

Cheers Col. I"m debating whether to get a full set of GT RADIAL 4SEASONS 215/65/16 from my local protyre supplier @ £76 each fitted which I reckon is not bad.

Worth getting your tracking checked while you're getting new tyres put on, while it was only low speed, can still knock things out a bit, you'll only notice tyre wear over significant miles

If my GT Radial Maxmilers are a guide, they'll be alright. I've had a lot of years/miles out of mine and they've kept us safe without any fuss. The MaxMilers are a tad noisy, and not the most comfortable, being van tyres pumped to 40psi - but they have worked very well.
