Afternoon, Im meant to be picking up a Defender tomorrow from the mother in laws place , but shes just told us the alrm keeps going off whenever you try to start it or open the doors. The battery was left to go flat for a few months and it hasnt been started for months would this have anything to do with it. She tried jumping it but it just turns over, what could be the problem? I dont fancy a two hour drive to come away without it and have to sit and listen to her all day ;) Cheers in advance

Assume its the puma as per your other thread? If so, the back up alarm (BBUS) will go off when you try to start it on a battery which is low on volts. If the battery has gone completely flat, the key fob will have lost its synchronisation with the vehicle. Get hold of the owners handbook and use the (car) battery removal procedure, get the battery charged up or replaced, and then re-synchronise the key fob. You will also need to use the radio code to reset the radio. Might also be worth changing the battery in the fob if its more than a couple of years old (follow the procedure in the handbook, this is important).

The red light on the dash illuminates when the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is approaching capacity. It needs a regeneration cycle - drive for at least 20 minutes at speeds between 40 and 70mph, the engine management system raises the exhaust temperature by changing the fuelling characteristics and the filter clears. If you want the common parlance - give it an italian tune up. If you have had the battery off or its lost most of its volts before a recharge, the engine management light can come on. This is not a fault, it means the engine management system has to re-learn some of the parameters based on driving style. After a few miles of driving, switch off engine, at re-start the light should go out (unless there is an underlying fault).

Hi cheers for the reply, it didnt seem to want to go over 30 mph ish like it was in limp mode. The mother in law is going to take it to a garage for us were back home now (Worthing), shes in Ealing. The father in law didnt exactly take good care of his cars. I think the Defender was run on red diesel a lot of the time to.
