I own a Landrover Discovery 200 TDI, its a 1993 model and for its age is in good nick. Over the last few months a problem has developed which has me and the mechanic that does the maintainence stumped. At first we thought it was the near side CV joint but he replaced it and the problem is still there. Basically its when im driving really slow as when in a que of cars, the noise begins with a clunk as i disengage the clutch and then continues until i re-engage the clutch. The vision I get is of two big cogs not meshing correctly. When i drive at speed there is no sign of the noise. Also it doesn't happen every time i drive slow, which has made it even harder to diagnose. Any ideas?

hummmm, bit of a puzzle. landies do tend to 'clunk' due to wear on the diffs, splines, U.J's or props. as for why some times and not others........?

if it were a deepender, i'd say A frame bushes (had the same symptom / problem on mine). Do disco's have a similar set up?

HELLO, Nice to see you. A strange problem indeed although perhaps, if it does not affect driving/performance/safety, it might just be wear and tear on bearings. Sounds like a similar problem I had on a 90 some time ago which eased with time and fluid changes...

Thank you all, I have just taken it out to a big car park in an attempt to get it to make the noise but wouldn't you know it it performed perfectly without any problems which is what normally happens when im trying to show the mechanic what im on about.Hello and welcome Alan
I think i can rule out the CV joints because i put a full lock on and did a circle in reverse and forwards and not a peep of a noise.
When it happens it definately sounds like something isn't meshing properly and only with the clutch disengaged. If it was the diff surely it would would act up all the time?

Thank you all, iv found out what the problem was, it was the hadbrake. Apparently i had some oil in the drum which soaked the brake shoes and made them sticky. When i was traveling very slowly as i described one of the brake shoes was becoming adhered to the inside of the drum as it spun. So basically it stuck then released then stuck then released and so on causing the prop shafts to shudder.
