Air filter roar

Hi All,

I have a very different air filter and it's generating a LOT of induction roar.
I've attached a picture.

I'm considering restoring the original air filter with oil bath, but despite having trawled through the parts catalogue I can't find the bits I'll need listed.

I've read the threads on here about the original oil bath air filter having reduced power, but I'd like to reduce the noise a little (and yes, I know that my diesel engine will never purr quietly).

So, can anyone point me a list of parts (possible I just missed it in the catalogue), tell me what I'll need or even suggest an alternative, intermediate solution which will retain some of the additional power while reducing some of the induction noise.

OK, so I assume there are supposed to be things to mount the original air filter, in which case they are missing.
It also seems that the original parts are no longer available other than via eBay and I tend not to trust that as a source of things unless I have no choice.
So, people have mentioned a K&N oil bath filter. what is it? Where do I get one and perhaps most importantly, how do you mount it?
If it's at the end of the hose then I can apparently still get the hose.
As I say, all I'm looking to do here is get rid of some of the air intake roar as it's really quite annoying.
Worst case I can stick with what I have any it will do. I'd just rather not if I have an option.

The filter sits on a sort of circular bracket in my engine bay and is held by a bit of metal on top which is tightened by a wing nut. (probably not a very helpful description (I'll have to see about getting a photo while the wings and bonnet are off mine)

K&n will just as noisy as its not an oil bath but a washable oiled material filter.
Look closely at the second hand filters you see as they often include the mounting bracket 'cos the bracket is quite simple and not bigger than the filter.

As you can the bracket is pretty simple and there's not much to go wrong with the filter, so I would try to overcome your eBay phobia. Or what about contacting a couple of landrover breakers? I would have thought there are loads of these filters around(could be wrong)

Thanks all. The pictures and everything are awesome.
I think I'll have to put up with a bit of roar until I can find an original unit in decent condition complete with mounting bracket.
I still want to restore the original oil bath one, but will just have to be more patient. I'm just not good with patience

You could just fit an empty oil bath filter and stick the K+N on the inlet to it. The housing will act as a silencer just like an exhaust box does

The inlet is the louvre bit at the top, not the spigot at the side (which goes to the inlet manifold) so I'm not sure how you'd geta filter on it.

If that is a 2.5 nas engine why not put the paper filter and canister from a 90 on it. If you get the correct hose it will lie on top of the air inlet till you decide where to put it. I have had mine on for three years and still not decided.

i think i have a bracket and oil bath in garage, you r welcome to it if u want to collect from feltham but im not gonna spend time cleaning and boxing to post.....

That's an idea! Does the canister mount in the same way as the oil bath? And does it go on the inlet/exhaust side of the engine?

I cut the legs off mine as I was going to fit it where the oil bath would go. Then I decided to move the battery under the seat and removed the whole assembly.So I just put some rubber round it and cable tied it to the inlet manifold. A bodge i know but I will fix it properly one day. I liked the k&n filter but you could here the lanny a mile away.
