I want to install a small air tank on (under) my Jeep G/Cherokee. In an
ideal world I would be able to power the compressor from the engine but
accept it'll have to be electric. It's only for occasional use when
camping - airbeds etc. but also useful for pumping up tyres etc.

Any one got any ideas what I can use?

We've tried a couple of on-board compressors, but have found it's just as
easy to use a £9.99 'Halfords special' that plugs into the cigarette
lighter. It still pumps up BF Goodrich 1050 15 AT's in less than 5 minutes
each ... ;) We just chuck it in the tow-rope and strops box in the boot ..

Yes but they're painfully slow and noisey. My idea is to spend more money
and have the facility to switch on in advance to fill up a reservoir. That
way if you arrive at a camp late you can inflate an air bed radidly and
quietly.

Hello
there is a few ways u can do this.
1) is this way http://www.off-road.com/isuzu/ptank.html
2) is you can mod the AC unit so it becomes a air pump. I knwo a few ppl in
the USA who have done this.
3) buy something like this
http://www.rocky-road.com/quickair.html
http://www.rocky-road.com/kickarb.html( just buy the compressor)

HOpe this helps

I was thinking along the lines of a HGV type air tank (or even a calor gas
bottle) and simply filling it with air at a garage. It'd be safe upto the
120psi or so that most comercial compressors deliver and would be able to
inflate several airbeds/dinghys/tyres, etc.

Why camp where there are others to wake up... thats too crowded, try
somewhere off the beaten track.

You're using the wrong type of pump. The small, noisy, inflators for
tyres are pointless for inflating air beds or dinghys. You should buy on
the HVLP types of pump sold specifically for inflatables. These are
cheap and very fast and much quieter.

I doubt that a compressed air cylinder which is what you seem to be
talking about, will have sufficient capacity to inflate more than a
single airbed, unless you are talking about pressures that I would not
be happy in having in a tank subject to a corrosive environment.

This what I use on my 300tdi defender 110, twin tanks, main and reserve
complete with pressure blow off valve filled by a belt driven A/C
compressor. I do recovery work and it powers most things albeit not for
prolonged periods but it soon refills. You don't half get some weird
looks when your driving down the road and the air valve blows off!! :)
