I noticed this problem today. I fitted an aftermarket steering box bracket (highlighted in blue box). The one that was on there when I stripped the vehicle down had rusted right through in some places. Someone had simply welded a plate over the outside of it so I binned it.

I replaced it with a galvanised one. However, the replacement doesn't have the fold in it that the originals did.

I noticed today that the steering box is too far over towards the driver's door. For example, the lines of the red box come down from the holes used to attache the coulumn support bracket. Obviously these should be in line with the sides of the column. At present there is no way to fit the column support bracket.

The hole in the green box should also be about another 1/2 to 3/4" further towards the engine.

Has anyone else had this problem? None of the aftermarket brackets I have seen have the fold in.

Does anyone have a spare original bracket? If so, I would be interested.

Thanks for any replies.

Yes I have one PM me or email will send for cost of postage.
Have you tried loosening the bolts to chassis and bracket to support bolts then inserting footwell bolts so you can pull it all together.
Might have to slot the footwell bolt holes.
From memory top column bracket holes are slotted.

Thanks for the reply.

I have loosened everything and tried to see how much movement I can get, but it's still all quite a way out.

Something I did think of was drilling another couple of holes and putting a couple of M8 nutserts in to the left of the holes. I could simply drill another hole in the footwell.

The only problem is that this might throw out the alignment of the column to the instrument panel.
