advice sought on buying a high mileage P38 Rangie

Hi there,

I'm new to this newsgroup and would be grateful if anyone could give me
some practical tips before I make a final decision about buying an M
plate Range Rover 4.0 SE. It's for sale in my local dealers at what
seems a very reasonable price (below £5K) but my concern is that it's
done 176,000 miles. One of the attractions of this Rangie is that it's
already been LPG'd. I'll be checking it's service history to see
what's been replaced, but I'd appreciate advice on any specific items I
should look out for.

Don't do it, do the words a "money pit" mean anything to you.

A simple rule of thumb with Range Rovers, if you can't afford a new/newish
one, you can't afford to run and repair an old one !.

I would be uninterested in such a beast at over £3K and probably not at any
price. It has done its work and if the last owner has decided to sell it is
probably for a good reason. He should have given it a good funeral with a
rememberance service.
If it were mine and it was OK then I would have run it into the ground. I
would certainly not expect anyone else to pay anything more than token money
for it, if indeed there was anyone willing to take it off my hands.
