Just my opinion having bought and sold a few of each...I'm sure you will get pro's and cons for both from owners...I see them as what gives me the least amount of problems for our pre-delivery inspection and for comebacks on those sold. The warranty company I use charge less for the TDi-300 cover than the TD5, this tells you quite a lot straightaway.
TD5:- Very nice to drive, smooth and refined, only there is far more potential for serious problems (read costly)...but hey that's Land Rover's all over, don't we love them
So to summerise TD5's are lovely when new and 'in warranty'...but can be a little risky when they are getting on in years and miles...and £6,000 isn't much to spend on a TD5, you are getting into the rougher end of the market.
TDi-300, far more 'barn door' engineering, they are simpler animals to diagnose and repair, and repairs can be mostly carried out by any competant garage, so I think TDi-300's make for a better second-hand purchase...flip side is they are not nearly as pleasent to drive as a TD5, TDi-300's are great until you drive a TD5 and these spoil you.
.....if it were my money I would opt for the latest cherished TDi300 you could find if you are looking to purchase, and keep hold of the car for a long time.
Hey, no such thing as a free lunch!
