Hi all. I am in the market for a new (old) Range Rover. I had a 2009 HSE when I lived in the UK but now I live in Italy and want something a little older. The 2009 gave me issues that, well... you all know.

I am looking at a 1999 4.6 HSE, petrol, automatic. The original air suspension was replaced with what they described as manual suspension. It looks beautiful, but I wanted to get some opinions on if these older models are better than the 2009 era that I am used to? What are the things I should be looking for and asking about?

The V8 is, IMO fragile, dropped liners, HGF camshafts made of cheese. The diesel is much better but each to their own. Personally I would not buy one on springs, the EAS is the best feature, unless the parts were there to put it back on air. As long as they are kept dry inside and serviced, in my experience they can be pretty reliable but never without the odd glitch. Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on. Budget for Nanocom diagnostics.

I would personally look out for a 4.6 that's been properly top hatted with a decent cam, it should see you well for quite a while
The diesel one is low on power

Hi! If your options include the diesel version I have a nice 1998 P38 2.5 DSE in Italy (LHD) that I am considering selling. Everything works as it should (including EAS, Hevac, sunroof, 2 fobs etc), new tires, 124k miles, manual transmission. If you are interested please drop me a line, I don't know where you live in Italy but I am in the north-east near Venice.
