advance or retard,, that is the question??

Retard will make it smoke more.
So you need to advance it which viewed from above is clockwise.
Mark the pump and the block before you start.
Loosen the inejctor pipes both ends, makes moving pump much easier.
Also saves putting the inj pipes under stress as they will break later.
Sometimes doesnt seem to move far at all, remove the 3 nuts and clean the **** out of the grooves and try again.

ok thanks guys but looking at the views here its still a 50/50 bet as one says advance and one says retard
:doh::doh::doh:

Well sod the rest James and me are right as this is how i did mine!
Not sure if you can count but me and James makes two so thats 66.66666 percent versus 33.33333 percent!
Go to far and you can tell as it knocks on acceleration.

right have advanced it slightly and it made a small difference to the smoke but it started to do a strange thing, every so often it runs a litle quicker and then returns to a roughish idle and every so often it also sort of coughs and puffs out some smoke..:(

Black or white smoke?

If it's white, you need to advance it. If it's black ... we won't go into that now ...!!

As you advance, you will probably find that it starts to run rough and possibly start to race. Take it past that point until your white smoke disappears.

Then adjust the idle and throttle screws until it runs nice and sweetly.

Push it as far round clockwise as you can ... I had to use a little bit of force on mine ... and when it starts to knock, back it off a degree or so.

Then readjust the slow running and tickover.

Keep an eye on the injector pipes and don't over stress them.

Please let us know how you get on.

I had to remove my pump and extend the slots slightly, before it then started to machine gun, backed it off a knatts tadger and it was much better, basically your timing chain has worn and is throwing everything out.
On the back of the pump is an inspection plate and under this is a timing mark, then using the flywheel timing mark you can set it up as per the book, 17 degrees btdc iirc problem is as the cam is also out it doesnt really help plus you then have to bleed it all up again and we all know how much fun that is.
So in a nutshell your motors getting tired
I cant recommend the tdi engine enough its transformed my car

i dont want to start any arguments but my info is from a injector pump builder of 30 years and his advice to me was when smoking retard pump, i have done this on about three occasions and it allways works.

i'll try both ways but will continue with advance first then the other way if that does not work...;)

Unfortunately, without the right (very expensive) equipment, it will be a case of trial and error. If one way doesn't work, try the other!

Please keep us informed.
