hi guys, my hand brake needs adjusting and i have to change the near side track rod end for the mot on my 03 td4 3 door freelander but never done this before can i get any tips please?

the hand brake i have ajusted the hand brake inside of the car but thats not helped so i,m thinking it will need to be ajusted in the rear drum, i dont have an hand book as such is it the same as most cars? which part do i need to adjust is there some sort of bolt i turn? sorry but only ever worked on a bike before now and thought i,d ask before i take it off tomorrow :)

track rod end looks pretty strait forward been told to make sure i keep it screwed on the same place as where it come off so i dont mess the tracking up? is that right?

thanx for any advice :)

Hi, it's very simple to adjust the handbrake - remove the cowling around the handbrake lever by loosening the four x-point screws, slide the cover back and off and adjust the handbrake by adjusting the nut you see on the back of the handbrake lever. Simples!

Track rod end is pretty much the same amount of time - mark the position and then remove the tre from the eye by holding the back part with a spanner, remove the nut. Fit the new tre to the original position. Check the steering afterwards, if it seems to pull at all then you ought to get the tracking checked.

if the handbrake is that bad you really need to have the drums off, and check everything and wind up the self adjusters a bit, trial and error till you can just get your drums back on.

i have adjusted the handbrake instead the car but its not really helped do you think the self adjuster might be jammed??

you might want to remove the drums and check the handbrake pivots that apply your shoes onto the drums,i done mine because they were seized up[even after been to a LR dealer for repair twice.]
best if you buy new pivot device's and fit them as once they start sticking it leads to all sorts of problems,ie handbrake not coming off when you release handbrake..--Dave

Chances are it will be, they move very slowly as the shoes wear so tend to get gunged up with brake dust and stop moving. Just stripped and cleaned mine last weekend, the self adjuster was stuck solid.

You must back off the cable adjustment inside the car before rebuilding the brakes and setting the adjusters

With the handbrake cable adjustment backed off it takes up to 30 presses of the pedal with the engine running for the adjusters to adjust up fully after assembly.
Then take up the cable adjustment so it holds at 4-5 notches and not before. If you adjust the cables too tight the self adjusters won't work.
