Please can you help,
My RR 4.6 HSE is currently showing 190k on the speedo, but going through the MOT's
It was MOT'd in June 2010 with 87944 miles on the clock
It was MOT'd again in may 2011 with 188572 on the clock
So 100k in 12 months I think not?
This took place with a previous previous owner who I am unable to trace, so my thoughts are it has had speedo change ? Or becm change?
If it was a speedo change then does the becm record the correct mileage?
Or any thoughts ???

Cheers
Chris

The BECM or instrument cluster has been changed for one with the higher mileage. It will go to the highest recorded by default whether that be the BECM or the instrument cluster.

Thanks guys, just checked mot database
1/2006. 50k
12/2006 55k
05/08 71k
05/09 81k
06/10 87k
05/11 188k
So looks like something has been changed!!
Cheers
Chris

You would have to ask someone like Rick the pick if this can be changed by fitting a new cluster showing a lower mileage or if the BECM stores the higher mileage saved in the cluster and then retains it as true. To be honest i don't know.

Which ever is changed it will go to the highest figure is my understanding. It does look as though it is possible to reset to zero, indeed I'm sure I read about a way of doing it, can't remember where though.

Yes i am sure that someone advertised supplying a returnable instrument cluster for a price with certain chips removed or added, can't remember which that zeroed the BECM. Then when a cluster reading the correct mileage was fitted BECM took that as true miles. But not entirely sure. Don't know who it was but Emmotts may know.
