Hello to all
Last week I posted for the first time on my 'stuttering' problems on my newly acquired 1999 TD5 Defender 110. It seems that I cannot drive this land rover slowly without it almost 'kangarooing'.
This is nothing to do with my driving technique, as I have been bouncing up and down the same track for nearly ten years in my now defunct 200 TDi.
At high revs particularly in 3rd gear I get stuttering. It is almost as there isn't enough fuel getting through.
Through a closer look, it seems that there is about a 2 second delay from when I take my foot off the accelerator, to the revs dying. It feels that the communication between the pedal and what the engine is doing isn't correct.
It was suggested that the problem on the higher revs stuttering could be due to a sticking Turbo wastegate.
Could this be the problem for the slower antics??
I am not a mechanic, and will need to be shown where the Turbo wastegate is in order to free it up a little.

Please help, aa this is driving me mad!

firstly the 'kangarooing' as you call it is most likely the 'fly by wire' electronic system which controls the accelerator pedal, only thing you can do is ask for it to be changed during a remap as far as i know... as for the waste gate, you may have the same problem as me, does it go into limp mote if you do about 70mph and try to accelerate then? im getting mine fixed today, im pretty sure its only that the wastegate is allowing the turbo to overboost though, you'll need a boost gauge to test this though, heres a pic of the wastegate

Not being picky but ..... The arrow is pointing towards the wastegate actuator. The actual wastegate is at the other end of the actuator rod, you can see the actuating arm sticking out of the turbo housing on the hot side of the turbo. Take off the linkage and see if the wastegate operates easily by hand. If so you may have a problem with the actuator itself but these are not available separately so you may need a trip to the scrappy to find one. Dont let him see you take it off though because he will want to sell you the whole turbo.

As for the throttle settings, the standard mapping makes the throttle response in high range a little too sensitive for rough driving resulting in the kangaroo effect you describe. You only need about a third of the available throttle travel to hit full power. Its designed to be comfortable at high speeds on good surfaced roads.

However if you switch to low range the throttle sesitivity is reduced by the ECU so that you now need full pedal travel to get full power. What you need is to get the mapping changed so that the throttle sensitivity is the same in high range as it is in low range (ie. reduced sensitivity). It makes the car much more driveable and stops your foot bouncing on the pedal on rough going causing big changes in throttle input. Gary at TD5Alive did mine and it made an instant improvement.

LR can do the same and it is a recognised problem with a simple fix.
