Hi there,
2003 TD4,Just had aircon re gassed the fans are not running, Showing over heating of the compressor on ac machine...
Also one fault code, Cooling fans not running.
Is there a sesor in the head(if so where) Or could it be the ECU fitted to
the plastic fan cover.
Thanks,
Mookman:(

Do the fans turn by hand, on the Discovery they always seize as they are located just behind the front grill where they catch all the water, I had to replaced mine.

Thanks for reply, Yes free as a bird ,I also think there is a clutch in them..
If i give them power direct they spin up fast an free ..This is just another SAGA of a freelander i have had a week.. First up had to rebuild one injector and high pressure pump Oring..
My old series Two was old, noisy and THIRSTY but it allways worked.
Thanks again ,
Mookman

This may help - its for the Freelander

Thanks for that ,
I have checked all fuses and links,Is there any sensors you can bridge to see if cooling fan is working indepentantly of the ac fan!!!!!

Hi,

Having the same problem with my 2005 TD4.

The compressor works fine, plenty of gas, new condenser fitted last year so no issues there. Problem being the fans will not engage for the condenser and as the compressor and condenser get hot the a/c will disengage until it cools to protect the components. This is not right, the fans should be running when the a/c is on.

I know this because it is an intermittent fault and sometimes the condenser fans work fine and the car is freezing even in this heat.

Does this sound like a fault with that silver box of tricks that is bolted to the fan pack? I’ve checked all the connections. How on earth does the fan pack disconnect (the one with the red thing in the middle!)? I’ve not come across such a strange connector, how does one release this??!

Will Hawkeye detect any faults?

P.s The engine never overheats

Thanks guys,

Drax

You might have a bad connection on the cooler pack module. You can test the unit by pulling the engine temperature sensor plug off. The EDC will detect a fault, and put the fans on to avoid an overheat situation.

Many thanks. Where is the engine temperature sensor?

Also, if anyone knows this you will... how does the main connector come apart on the cooler pack? There must be some knack!

Another question... what is the blue connector near the battery try that links to the coolant pack loom? Just had that apart and cleaned with contact spray. Fans came on in 5 seconds after starting from cold. Could be a coincidence mind you!

I’ll put it on Hawkeye tomorrow see if that will shed any light?

The plot thickens! Hawkeye shows no engine faults. I can force the fans to run any speed using Hawkeye under engine control. Is the A/C Under a different control than the engine ECU?

I’m confused now!

If it's round, then it's probably the ABS sensor plug.

That's not normal. The fans should only start when needed.

That's good, as it proves the cooler pack power module is working, as well as the wiring to the EDC.

The EDC is responsible for control AC control, including the fans.
I’m confused now
And rightly so.

Many thanks for helping me understand some of the systems idiosyncrasies!!

Sometimes it won’t play ball and fans won’t come on and let the a/c overheat..and not even throw a fault....crackers!

Land Rover gremlin playing games with me! More head scratching....

Curiously, I did find a fault code on the fuel burning heater... something about flame stop cleared and gone away.

I also would like to know as i am not convinces that my fans arent working either, especially after waiting in not just one tailback but three in one day!! Engine very hot upon getting home but dash display never went above half way

Ok, today I noticed the fan wasn’t working after a gentle run and it’s fairly warm out. The a/c compressor was cutting in and out and the pipe was really hot.

Put it straight on Hawkeye. No engine faults... HOWEVER... I was not able to actuate the fans using Hawkeye. I had to power cycle the car (ignition on and off ;) ) a few times and then the fans started working as expected and I was able to manually actuate them.

Something is obviously sticking or that control module is playing up?

Any suggestions as to where to go from here??!

Anyone know the part number for the fan pack? Either that or looking for a good low mileage used one
