I did a search but couldn´t find anyone having the same problem as me, so here goes:

On reading RAVE it says that the ABS light on the dashboard should work as follows:
1. Light comes on during the bulb check after switching on the ignition
2. Light goes out for half a second or so
3. Light comes back on
4. Light goes out once the car is driven over about 5mph

My problem is No.2 - the light doesn´t go out for the half second or so, it stays on until I drive at over 5mph then goes out. RAVE says that this is because there is a fault logged in the ECU. The ABS appears to be working as you can hear the pump going when I engage HDC (which is working).

So on to my questions:
1. Any idea what the fault may be?
2. Would an ordinary diagnostic reader (Elm 327) be able to read the fault code, or do you need something else to read ABS fault codes?

And no, I won´t be pushing it off a cliff, setting fire to it or destroying it in any other way!

Cheers.

Hello

What normaly happens next is the TC warning light starts going, then you get a disco effect on the dash board whilst driving.
Answer, change the brake pedal switch (about £10). The circuit for ABS and TC goes through this. Mine was doing it, got the brother in law (whos an auto electrician) to run a fault check, they were some logged but they meant bugger all (i.e they say the lights on but for no explainable reason) So changed the switch.... no more light display on the dash. Search freelander brake switch on google, this should explain more.

Hope this helps

What model year is it? Changes for 2002my mean light behaves differently and doesn't need to go out and come back on.

In any case a fault logged in the history doesn't mean you have a fault now, just that at some time it detected something. If you have a permanent fault the abs light would be on constant.

It´s a 2000my.

It doesn´t bother me as such at the moment, but it was brought to my attention last time I went for an MOT. I hadn´t noticed it, but the garage said that they should fail the car for it - but as they´re a little... errrr ..... "friendly" they didn´t. I´m planning to import the car into Spain and I know it´ll fail their import inspection in its current state, which is why I´d like to get it sorted out.

You'll need someone with a professional reader to access the ABS ECU. Hopefully just clearing the memory is all that's required if there is no fault present now.
As a (very) long shot have you tried disconnecting the battery overnight?
