Hello
I've decided that my galaxy has to go and I'm after a 4x4 I have
about 7-8 grand to spend what would you recommended. It will be used to tow
quite a large caravan.

Thanks

That amount of money should buy you a fairly decent RangeRover or Discovery,
which are *very* good towing machines and on top of that very capable
off-road.

Will you be wanting to go off-road?

Isuzu Bighorn, with 3.1 or 2.8 TDi engines, or the 02/03 3.0i TD engine and
TOD.
Lotus package for onroad comfort and towing.

Make sure its a Jap import Isuzu badged 4x4, the Vauxhall badged monterys
which are the same vehilce made in england with a english badge don't seem
to have as good a quality control section and have heard a lot of complaints
about the vauxhall badged Fronteras.

If you want to also go off-road then I'd suggest the Landrover Discovery.
Mine's great, with no problems whatever, even after going off-road every
weekend we're not away in the caravan .. It's also pretty good even if you
don't want to off-road ever. In this case, just fit it with decent on-road
tyres .. ;)

If off-roading isn't really what you want, then a Subaru Outback is a great
4x4 car which has some off-road capability and would certainly cope with
taking a caravan most places where you may want to take a caravan .. Though
they are a bit expensive for a good one .. ;)

Disco for that money, best by far. All parts available at sensible prices,
imports are pricey.

You are not UK based, which explains your inaccuracy.
Vauxhall Monterey was Japanese built and the same machine as the
Isuzu Trooper available in the UK with some trim differences and the
different badges. Few problems with any but the oldest Frontera
either.

Any of these would make good first time four wheel drive vehicles.
None are cheap to run.

The world is your lobster.
7-8k plus your Galaxy will easily get you a second generation Range
Rover of about '95 or '96 vintage with less than 100,000 miles so
anything from a Niva up is within your grasp.
Give the Daihatsu and Niva a miss because you can obviously do better.
If the total you have to spend is 8k then maybe an Isuzu is for you?
Plenty of Discovery out there too if you like a challenge and need
something to keep you occupied of a weekend. I like the Discovery but
my wife does not like to drive it because it is "heavy" and the
steering wheel is just too chunky to be comfortable. Also, she sits
too near the airbag in it. Poor access to second row seats through
narrow doors, if this is important to you.
