AA or RAC?

Which one of these do you use or think offer the better service? If there are any good ones other make them known!
 
Have you spoken to either of them? I was under the impression that the RAC tended not to go for the older vehicle, which is why I opted for the AA.

At the end of the day it's probably swings and roundabouts, but I can't fault the AA so far, only called em out twice mind. Once when the ignition failed which they bodged enough to get me home and to a mechanic.

Second time when I , rather embarrassingly, left my work lights on all day and flattened the battery ,stuck in the middle of nowhere, they came out , inside 2 mins was up and running and off home , superb.
 
Sure-term do a add on "recovery / assistance" to the standard landy insurance.

Do personal cover is very good "Covers the holder in any vehicle" so i have my Day to day car covered and my 1964 series 2a Landy week end car is covered also i have my wife on it and it gets her car too.

I think the AA do one as well.

The RAC and AA don't like covering old cars (The personal cover gets around this) and none of the road side assistance setups will try too hard to recover you from a unpaved road.

So in short if you are looking to cover all your cars then Personnel cover and if you jut want to cover your landy then get cover with the insurance.
 
LLoyds bank offer free AA membership with some of thier current accounts. I think you can either get just recovery or full roadside assist depending upon the account. This covers the account holder regardless of vehicle and you only need to be in it, not necessarily the driver.

Called AA out once when I had a trailer wheel bearing collapse. They refused the job because teh trailer overhung the bed of thier truck by more than a meter. gave me a number of a local garage who did the job without any problem. Seemed strange when they turned up in a truck with "AA Agent" written on the side. the AA would have sent this guy to do the job on thier behalf if the trailer had been a foot shorter!!!!

Never had any dealings with the RAC, can't comment on that one.
 
I have had plenty of dealings with both and found the RAC to be a pain in the ass when ever we called them out. I have never had a problem with the AA always quick to respond and always service with a smile.

same here - been member of AA since 1991 - never had any problems - got me out the ****e a few times - I also get free 'homestart' cus i've been with them so long
 
Been an AA memeber for years, varing experience, usualy good to brilliant. A lot depends on the patrol they send out. A few couldn't care c& juat want to get home, but most seam to be happy to go way beyond the call of duty to sort you out.
Check the cover carefully, especially if you have as big vehicle/trailer, see DV's experienece, a 101 may be pushing things, make sure you know before yopu leave home.
 
Also you may have to be prepared to argue with the patrolman
as i did once with a AA guy who said he couldn't tow my landy as
A It was too heavy for his van.
B He couldn't tow a 4x4 because of damaging the drive.

so i pointed out my series 2a Landy
A weighs the same as a Toyota corolla (all but 50kgs)
B its in 2 wheel drive.
 
Greenflag - you wont get a smart looking bloke in posh clothes turn up as you would with the AA or RAC, you'll get some from from a local garage who won't moan if he's got to crawl under yer vehicle at midnight, in the rain on the M6

These are who are usually what offered as part of yer insurance addon
 
My oild man uses green flag and got me and any car i drive or am in added on for about £35 extra!
i havent ever used them but he called them out to tow his disco and caravan when the gearbox dropped out.they new they needed a big flatbed for it and sent one first time, manned by a geezer who gave it a good go at fixing there and then on a rainying easter sunday, just like Sean said!

also, any cover offered with insurance/accounts is basic cover and will only be 10 miles cover (you have to pay rest)

ie; 50 miles - 10 = 40 x £2.00 = £80+vat....

Land Rover Recovery used to be very good and cheap if you wanted their good overseas cover but they suddenly got very stroppy about taking my Disco to the garage of my choice (ie NOT one I knew was crap), as well as more pricey so I changed a year ago to Britannia/CSMA. Haven't used them yet so no experience of what they are like, but friends say they are good. They are also cheap (especially if you or spouse work for the government). Only hassle is they want two days' notice if I'm going abroad, and although they cover me for any car over here I had to nominate one car for use abroad - OK so long as the Disco is working at the time!
