I think i may have bitten off more than i can chew so i thought i would pop over here to the series section of landyzone for some advice. there is a lovely old series IIa at the stables where my sister keeps her horse. I have known the stable owners for many years and when we got chatting about the old IIa it turned out that they want to get rid of it but can't bear to break it. they haven't the money to restore it so are in a pickle as it were. to cut an already long story short, i offered to take the project on myself. The only thing is i don't know the first thing about series landrovers let alone mechanics. Is this too much for a beginner or would this be a reasonable first restoration project?

That depends on whats state the thing is in at the moment. If it justs needs the dust blowing off it and an oil change then any idiot can do it. If the chassis is rotten and the engines knackered then it probably isn't even worth starting on.

If you budget for absolutely everything needing replacing you won't be far wide of the mark. Even if the chassis/engine/gearbox are ok you'll still need fairly deep pockets. Everything you try to remove will either break or need cutting off with a grinder. You might be able to bodge it together enough to scrape through an MOT for not too much money but if you're talking about rebuilding it prepare for the worst then you won't be dissapointed

Try and take somebody with you who knows series landies and has worked on em. Trouble is you don't really find out what needs doing till you take it to bits.

It all depends on you.
Are you mechanically inclined ? willing to have a go?
If so then it's a good project to start with as most thing on a series are like "big boys mechcarno" and simple to understand.
If you pay for someone to do it that yep you could be looking at £10
but for you to do it then it can be a lot less
