Hi Landyzoners..

As we know, some things are best left to those who know what they're doing, and besides learning to weld & fashion metal right now I think might be a tall order for me... not least but including being garage-less. So I leave this message requesting the services of an expert Landy welder and hope it finds you.

Its an MOT job and a bit more really - a tidy up underneath. Although the previous MOT`er said the chassis itself was good, the four body mount points need 'doing', and some metal making at the front part of the wheel arch close to the mount where the 'tester' was testing how strong his hammer was.

Testers notes :
Repair immediately (major defects):
• Nearside Front Integral body structure or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a body mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))
• Offside Front Integral body structure or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a body mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))
• Nearside Rear Integral body structure or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a body mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))
• Offside Rear Integral body structure or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of a body mounting (6.2.2 (d) (i))

I can deliver vehicle 150 miles from London area, leave it with you and pick up when ready.

So, thanks for reading and considering.

Kind Rgds

[I know there are welding threads elsewhere etc, and I will maybe post there too].

Without ****ing on your bonfire, no one knows the extent of the welding until they see it and start chopping it up! It could be a few bits or it could end up like mine - who knows.

Anyways @dieseldog69 you like punishment and this can pay for some shiny bits for yours

I thought it were only the silver ones that rusted this bad. Looks too good to scrap, but agree until you start probing who knows.

I will say with no real welding background I replaced a badly corroded crossmember on my Defender.

I'm probably too far away from you to take it on, but some pictures of the area in question might help us understand how bad the rot is....

I'm not an expert either like you have requested lol we need pictures mate. As clear as possible. Sills, mounts, arches, rear floor, spring seats, boot.....

Thank you all very much for your replies.

I appreciate that without seeing what state things are in its hard to judge the amount of work required. However, that can be determined when I find the man to do the welding, the price accordingly can we worked out later. I appreciate that this might affect someones willingness to do the job, it being an unknown quantity, but having said that one never knows until one starts poking about anyway, right? I'm not really set up to be crawling underneath and photographing currently. There were no issues with these four corners last MOT, but it has had welding before; Offside sill done, and rear seatbelt mounts. When the sill was done, poor Simon was cursing as he found more than he quoted for?!! Anyway, I don't live there any more, otherwise I'd take it round to his garage, and now I just need a bloke with the right skills to just take things as they come; There will be the need to fashion metal for both front undersides to mount points, and if not weld then replace the rear mounts.

Having exposed my apparent g@yness about crawling underneath right now, I still may be able to get some photos if it helps.

Thanks to those who have said they might be able to help, perhaps you can consider further in light of this post.

Kind Rgds

I'm on the farm tomorrow so will ask regarding space and me doing the work there. As mentioned, I'm no pro. Have a look through my project thread. I'm happy with the repairs on mine but appreciate you may want prettier. Thread is steep learning curve and your best off just looking at the last dozen or so and skim read. I'd like to help and if it isn't a **** load of work i.e. not a full resto and more a weekend or twos work I will try and sort it. You don't have to crawl under just try and get pics of where they highlighted. I'm m4 j16

Its most definitely not a full restoration - its got a great chassis, nice body etc etc (great set up too, toys, beautiful drive etc), just needs somebody taking charge of the points I've made and making it nice underneath in one or two other places if found - And leaving a warning sign welded in for the next MOT tester telling him he's `testing`, not auditioning for a job in demolition.

Thanks.

I'm up the farm tomorrow mate. She shouldn't mind if a weekends work but I think you'll need to order new mounts by sounds of it. It's up to you - I'll ask if you'd like to do a deal.

That's very kind, thank you. And I've seen your thread, it looks superb.

I'd prefer just to leave it with somebody now, let them get any bits, mounts, metal etc.

It may just be one W.E.s work (while remembering that working on LRs is REAL work, of course, and things can go on), I'd just be prepared for that and 'a bit more'...but just in case.

Ok. I'm doing exactly that for the lady whom owns the farm. I buy bits and keep receipts. There's a degree of trust in this both ends mate. I'd document all of it on here anyway. I'm a trustworthy person but like I said I am not a professional.
The normal sequence when working on hers is I strip down the bit I'm doing to diagnose what is required, discuss and buy the bits then weld up or fit following weekend. I can use my paint etc as no point you spending on such a small area but would appreciate if I fix it up for mot you paint the lot in your own time and keep it on the road (and don't mot it to sell it!)

Agreed! Let me know when and where.

Thanks very much!

People are good to me on here and have gone out there way more than once to help, advise or offer me bits that they could just sell. I am happy to help another member just off the back of that. I have a full day on the defender tomorrow so will discuss over a cuppa with the farm owner. The vehicle will be on a farm but gates are kept locked and my dobe is there a lot in the day ;)

I'll pm you from here on mate but likely to be next weekend if you can do that? If you could take a look on froggatts or yrm you will get an idea of prices for mounts. Are your sills still standard landy ones or box sectioned?

Off side is fashioned / box sill, don't know nearside - why is that important?

Next Weekend would be good. And to answer your question, the whole idea is to keep the Landy, and not let it go for chips.

Thanks.

Brilliant. No not an issue. If it's box it will be thicker but I have thick stuff here I can use. I'll find out tomorrow, update you then give you a call? I put j16 I'm 17 - chippenham/bath. An hour from reading j11
