my rocker cover gasket is leaking, so needs to be replaced, as far as i can see i all i need to do is move the air filter hose out of the way and then there will be 3 bolts to undo then remove the old gasket and put new one in and re assemble, is it that simple ?
also, sometimes when i am braking it 'dives' and turns violently to the right, but sometimes it doesnt, theres no sound (eg. grinding, whiring etc) so i took off the brake drum to inspect it for wear, and it seems to have uneven wer on it, there is normal flat wear in the centre of the contact area, and on the far edges there looks to have been no wear since new and there is a area or rusted and are higher that the centre,(e.g in a cross section it looks like a channel) , so i am currently suspecting this been the cause, and i presume that the drum must move slightly sideways for this to happen, any other ideas or anyone had a similar problem?? thanks ben

which one did you take off as it would seem left brake isnt working efficently ,oil leak on shoes ? clean rocker box well where gasket sits glue new gasket to rocker box with silicone sealant etc and let it set with rocker cover sat on gasket on flat surface till set

i took off the front right shoe, there is no oil leak but i thought that if it is the shoe pushing on an unworn surface the shoe will travel less distance to push against the shoe, e.g the dist on the right before it hits the drum will be 5 mm due to the unworn bit, and 10mm on the left so once the right is touching, the left wont be touching the drum therefore pulling the landy right as its the only one been braked... thanks for the info on the rocker cover gasket, but what type of sealant (could you tell me a name, and or where to get it?? im guessing bathroom silicone sealant wouldnt do as it wont be able to handle the heat ??? thanks ben

Evo stik will work on the gasket to cover joint (it just keeps the gasket in place when refitting) with a smear of non setting (hylomar or similar) on the gasket to head if you feel you need it. You may have to remove the vacuum pipe from carb to dizzy if it's a petrol.
The brakes are more of a mystery. Any chance of a piccy? Which braking system do you have? It's important to make sure the shoes and springs are properly seated and the cylinder pistons are all moving freely. Getting them properly adjusted is important, too.

Sorry no chance of piccy,(lack of leads etc to make it all work) this is a representation ish of how the contact area of the drum looks
|
(----________-----| this bit is where the wheel should be
^. ^ this is the usual contact area
^
This is the bit that is too high, ( the part of the drum nearest the centre of the car)

And while looking over the landy, I have noticed the battery has leaked, now needs replacing, any ideas where to get one of those bi battery's ??? Thanks Ben

trying to get my head round this....is your representation of the surface of the drum or the shoes?

Shouldn't be any sideways float on the drum unless your bearings are so slack its all flapping about

Definitely worth checking the other side. When a wheel cylinder starts to go the braking efficiency can 'come and go' which would give your symptoms, as could sticky wheel cylinders/ badly adjusted.

Probably no mystery you just need to do a little maintenance and if in doubt replace cylinders/shoes/springs and start afresh..........parts aren't going to cost you alot and there's not many things worse than having to hit the anchors and swerving into oncoming traffic!

Yeah, new drum, cylinder, shoes and springs aren't too dear and it's worth checking for play at the edge of the wheel in case it's a sloppy bearing. It's worth checking the other side too - it might be the same and it's good practice to overhaul brakes in axle pairs. And never assume what's already there is correct, the last owner could have been a mechanical muppet!

Thanks for the advice chaps, pay isn't til the end of the month and as its a toy not an everyday car, it will be easier to get the other bills paid for first, I'll tell you all how it goes, ( also when it comes to brakes and bearings, id say I'm more Alless a mechanical muppet!!) what is a good way to check the wheel bearings ?? Thanks Ben

Lift the wheel off the ground, there should be the merest discernable play at the edge of the wheel.
