90 won't start!!

Hi all, (again)
Last week my '86 90 diesel won't start - it just made a clicking noise. My neighbour came over with a hammer, gave the starter motor a clack and hey presto i was off - it's been sound since. This morning though when I tried to start it i left the glows on for the usual length, but it just won't fire up. Just getting that horrible whirring noise and then it seems to die out. Battery is ony a month old and when I turn the ignition the dial shows it going to about 9 or 11V (is this enough). Lights and everything are coming on. Any suggestions. Ive whacked the starter motor just to try but to no avail.

Forgot to mention - when I turn the key once in the ignition all the lights etc on dash come on as normal and the battery dial moves up. When key again to the glow the battery dial drops again - is that normal???
 
9 - 11 volts is as good as flat for starting purposes. If it's a new battery check the alternator and all your connections, earths etc.
 
What are the ratings of the new battery you got fitted?
I posted 2 days ago looking to replace mine. I was advised that the CCA rating was important (take a look at the thread) and got one with a 750 CCA and 110 Amps. I don't think a standard battery will cope turning the engine in this weather. Has to be a big fooka.
 
It's got the big heavy duty battery in it and started after a jump; i'm presuming something is draining when the engine's off. I keep seeing people write "check the earthings" - forgive me as i'm a complete novice at all this but what does that mean and where are they??
 
could always take the starter motor off, put it on a bench and stick 12v through it, and check the benidix is not sticking to the shaft, if is stick some wd40 on it,
 
More than likely if you have to tap it to get her going its the BUS BAR in the solonoid is fooked ( they burn the contacts out ) , either get the soloniod replaced at a start motor repair centre or buy a new starter motor :) .
 
Sounds like the motor i not supply enough torque when initialy powered up to cause the bendix gear to spin into the flywheel ring gear. - This is probably because the batery votage is too low, the earth strap (big fooking cable connecting the engine to the body of the landy - usualy near the clutch slave cylinder) is worn away, or the start motors brushes are nackered.

if the 9-11 volts when cranking, when the glow plugs engagued or before you do this?
