I've noticed while driving, very occasionaly I'll get a crunch or slight difficulty getting into a gear.

The clutch only bites very near the end of it's travel, last inch, and only fully engages within the last 2cm or so. Not noticed any slipping or strange noises.

Is this normal?

We bought a new 90 Station Wagon last year and it was the same...clutch only releases in the last inch of travel and random crunching into the lower gears. I never did anything about it as the dealer said it was "normal" but the crunching of gears went away after a few thousand miles. The clutch still has to be pressed to the floor to disengage but the gearbox is fine now. I was told to try different gearbox oil but never got round to it.

I suspected that it could be normal. (It's my first Landy)

I bought it a couple of months ago, it's done 52000miles, so I thought it might be time for a new clutch, but the crunching is not too bad, might try an oil change soon!

:)Good, at least I don't need a new clutch!!!:)

Thanks for the advice

Check the main box level straight away mate - will take you about 5 mins with a 13mm spanner - don't overtighten the filler/level plug when you put it back in. Just done this one mine and after adding about 500ml of ATF it's perfect.

If you want to see (or feel) how to NOT design a clutch, leap from a 300tdi into a TD5 Defender. Many women do not have the leg strength to change gear in a TD5. They get even worse when that stupid flywheel starts falling to bits, and it costs a fortune to fit a new one.

I would not accept being told by a dealer crunching gears is normal.

We bought a new Def 90 in 05, and no such problems.
however, just lately it seems to take up the drive right at the end of the clutch travel and also judders a bit.
Its going in for a brake check recall soon, so will get them to have a look.
We went a run to Malvern in the week and the clutch problem went away.

You should not be having to try different oils in a vehicle under warranty either.

What is the brake check recall? I have not heard of that one!

its a check on the rear brake pipe routing somewhere. Some may need attention and others are ok.
Apparently some deafeners could have a bit of chafing somewhere. I will dig out the letter with the recall ref number if I can find it.

I have scanned a bit of the letter from LR, and ear it is.

2004/5 Model Year Defender 90

Rear Left Brake Pi De -Incorrect Routing - A042

Dear Sir/Madam

Land Rover has received a small number of reports of a foul condition between the left-hand rear brake pipe and the fuel tank on 2004/5MY Defender 90 vehicles.

Following investigation of this concern it has been established that the left hand rear brake pipe may in some instances be routed too close to the fuel tank, allowing it to foul on the fuel tank under some extremes of axle
Articulation. This can lead to pipe wall damage and possible brake fluid leakage resulting in more brake pedal
travel and greater brake pedal effort being required.

.
The fluid level warning indicator will be illuminated, but if all warnings are ignored, brake pedal travel will progress1vely extend and the braking efficiency will slowly diminish. More brake pedal effort will be required to operate the brakes. The brake system design (dual circuit) means that a degree of braking efficiency will still be available, albeit with longer pedal travel.
What land Rover and your dealer will do
Land Rover Dealerships will check the routing and condition of the rear left brake pipe and where necessary the brake pipe will be re-routed/renewed.
