90 Chassis swap with a second hand one

Hey peep's

I expect this has been asked before but I am going to change the chassis on my 90, with a really good second hand one. What I am asking is can I just weld my chassis number into the chassis as a plate, legal or not, does it need to be inspected. Please, what are your thoughts.

you can't weld your chassis number onto a used chassis.
The chassis it the vehicle, as doc said, so you would have to transfer your reg no onto the chassis or use the reg no that come with the used chassis.
Of course you would also need the V5 to do this.

personally id look at a new chassis, by the time you have a used one of unknown origin and quality/state of repair, a new and/or galve one would be worth the investment imo

may sound like a stupid question, so how do you go on when you fit a new chassis reguarding the v5 ect ?

A new chassis is a replacement part, it takes on the ID of the old one - which should be destroyed ideally.

If you use a second hand chassis then it already has an ID from its original vehicle so you end up with conflict.
 
I've noticed the other problem if using a 2nd hand chassis is scrapping your old vehicle (chassis) as there isn't a section on the V5 anymore to say you scrapped it yourself. You have to do it through one of the vehicle recyclers. So I guess you'd have to take the old chassis to them so they can inform dvla it's scrapped.
 
There is nothing in the regs that says a chassis has to be new for you to keep your old reg no. In fact IIRC there is a section to inform DVLA of a change in chassis number

As for scrapping a vehicle you just write "Not Applicable" in the box where it asks for the name of the dismantler.

If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is used a car must pass an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) and light goods vans must have a enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA) or single vehicle approval (SVA) test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated.
