Following on from my previous post, before resigning my new aquisition to the garage for a winter project (im afraid to admit in your company that i bought this machine unseen!! 94 n/a 90) i naughtily took her out under cover of darkness last nite on a very little used country lane near me for a test drive. I report the following defects:

Brakes pull to one side but ive already spotted an oil leak on n/s rear hub. O/S rear locked under heavy breaking.
Steering feels a bit vague but no clunks or knocks
Transmission ok apart from 1st/reverse being in same place - i have been given usefull advice on this already by you guys
Engine performed ok but "steaming " heavily from filler cap - this is very loose and looks like it needs a new seal. If i pull the cap off i can block it off quite easily with my hand - not much pressure
From a cursury look, the chassis is in good condition - its rusty on the surface in places but hasnt been plastered in bitumen to hide anything - no doubt once i get underneath and start broggling!
Oh ds footwell is on its way out - are repair panels available?

One bit of bad news - the door on my garage is 3 inches too low so roof has to come off at weekend...doh

Any help or advise would be appreciated
thanks
Steve

hub seals brakes bit panels and anything else you need can be got frompaddocks, craddocks or that other one that dunt rythm with pox.. ah think you find once you've done yer brakes that all will lock up under heavy braking, well atleast the back two

broggling:.. from the verb brog..to brog etc
brog is an old cornish word fer chipping away while on the look out fer tin ore. as the tin mines petered out the word drifted into use by bodge merchants and other dodgy car repairers to mean.. chipping away paint to look fer iron ore or oxide.
it is now is common use by people called steve to mean beating the **** out of landrover chassis while looking fer rust.

hope this explains it all grunt

If the cap is not properly sealing then the water will steam, water under pressure can reach 100deg without boiling, if the cap is not sealed then it may not reach boiling point but will steam away, so a new cap or resevoir is needed.

For the rest, sounds not to bad. Happy broggling (ware goggles or summat, that rust in yer eyes in't so good)

Well it was dark and I was looking with a torch so difficult to say. I'll fire her up again at the w end when neighbor hasnt got her washin out! you thinkin head gasket or something? oil is clean and so is water in rad header
