As my trailer has 7 pin ‘N’ type plug only and caravan has both ‘S’ and ‘N’ type leads.
The RR only has a 7pin ‘N’ type socket on the chassis. So the reversing lights or battery charging dont work on the caravan.
Could I connect a ‘S’ 7pin socket using 7 core cable for the reversing lights and 12v supply to the caravan. Rather than buy a costly harness for the number times it would be used.

Are you talking about the RR in your signiture?
If so I am suprised its only fitted with the 7 pin socket at that age.
It should have the direct plugins for the 13 pin.

TBH there is so much going on in a morden car it maynot be that easy.
I would just convert the car with the correct wiring harness to a 13pin and get some adaptors. Even for ocasional use its obviously an issue when you do tow the caravan.

We run 3 trailers and they are a mix as are the cars that tow them so we have a few adaptors in each car to suit. But not all functions.
But then we are not going to tow the horsebox (it has living space too) with the 90 ;).

So I guess we need to know which RR you are talking about;).

Decades ago I would have said 'why not' but linking in to today's complex vehicle electronics could see your instrument panel light up like a Christmas tree
But then I'm not a sparky, so waiting for informed advice would be a good idea.

Don't forget the caravan 13pin has 2 supplies, always on and switched.
So does 7 pin s socket. I have fitted both sockets on the P38 and the last L322 I had but must admit I purchased the proper loom so it just plug and play for this one (2008 L322) but reckon I could have worked it out to fit both if had to. Don't own a caravan (past dream) but I do get called on to check electrics on other people's vans at times hence going for both.

Sorry guys, have to admit I’m a numpty.
Not taken any notice how many pins in the socket on the RR. Started to trace cables etc etc and found the caravan had a converter 13p to 7p. Thats why the reversing lights etc dont work. 🤭

So you have 13 pin on the car?

Where would that permanent live be being a seven pin plug?
Unless it's wired to a dedicated trailor🤔
Just for example below, although there are particular adaptations also.

The permanent live on 7 pin systems is in the second 7 pin connector denoted 7S.

Is it a special application?
The number of standard trailer kits I've fitted there's never been a live pin 🤔 the only live for most modern kits I've fitted have been for the control module along with its own earth👍
Unless your talking about the additional second socket for caravans🤔

The 7S socket was standard for towing a caravan, in the case of the P38, there is a loom in the left side rear quarter for the 7S socket. As you know, the two 7 pin sockets have, courtesy of the EU, been superceded by the 13 pin socket which uses all the same connections.

I just fitted a 13 pin unit to the wife's D4, I bought it as "used but unopened" so effectively new and paid less than £80 for it. They are available new from around £120 -£130. I'd only use something like that on a late car and then code it so that it it knows it's fitted and disables the PDC (may even modify the traction control but unsure on that) when the trailer is connected. For such a small amount of money, it's really not worth doing anything else in my opinion. You can use a 13>7 pin converter or 7+7S converter that way you're covered for everything you want to tow.

Alternatively, this is on eBay currently which is the other half of what you have I think. 7S Discovery 4
