Over this weekend two different symptoms have developed that appear to be linked.

1) Intermittent noise from off-side low down in engine compartment. I've heard the noise described as like the folded cardboard in bike wheel trick or dry bearings. It originally appeared to be linked with turning and/or aircon, but then found I could make it happen putting in reverse with aircon. Now does it most of time, particularly when in gear.

2) Starting a little later than the first, a less noticable noise but not disimilar and appearing to arise from no specific area of the engine. This noise definately occurs when accelerating slightly, but disappears when pulling hard or coasting. Black smoke has now started to come from the exhaust but NOT when the noise is occuring.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm supposed to be going on holiday today with the caravan.

I know very little about cars but having being inspired by other threads I have been out and had another look at the problems.

1) The 'cardboard' protection for the pulleys/belts had become slightly dislodged and occasionally catching on the bottom toothed pulley. Realignment and problem solved.

2) I believe it's called the turbo hose - wide hose near the battery as mentioned in other threads. Yes it's split. Have temporarily taped it up and ....... problem solved.

Both faults cured and I will be going on holiday tomorrow.

I cant beleive THAT! sorted out yer Pullin to the left/right problem:D

Have a nice Holls! Mind how yer go;)

Let us know how far yer get:p :D

Hi Coling, if the part you are talking about is really made of "cardboard" then I would take the vehicle back and do what Mondo said in his post.
Your pulling to the left problem is serious on any vehicle and to be informed one wheel is further back than the other should have got you back there anyway.
If you do go on your hols in it go on your own and keep your speed to about 5mph as with that fault and the turbo hose liable to blow at any time you will be a hazard to everyone.

You want holidays AND a Freelander?

One or the other Coling, you can't have both! I sold my Freelander and I'm off to St Lucia in November. Couldn't have gone if I had a Freelander still ;)
