Hello

I'm thinking about getting a 4x4 (to be used on-road) in the £4000 - 5000
range. Probably either a Rav4, Mitsubishi RVR or perhaps a Kia Sportage. Has
anyone got any general advice on what to look for (or what not to buy!).

Cheers

Jon

It may help if you say what you want it for.

He said he wanted it for on road.

Since you list soft roader I would go for the Rav4 as second choice and
a Honda CR-V as first choice.
Plenty about in Autotrader. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/

The Kia is pretty unloved and the RVR too unknown.

Quite a few of the 4x4 mags do a buyers checklist of what to look for or
pay the AA.

Hi,

Why do you want a 4x4 for on road?

You pay a penalty in fuel consumption, stopping distance and stability.
If you wnat something with space, not that a RAV4 has much choose an estate
or people carrier.

Look at the EURO NCAP website http://www.euroncap.com/
for crash test performance. It is quite a supprise.
If you need to use it off road or need a strong tow vehicle then you have a
need.. Neither the Kia or the RAV4 works as a tow vehicle you need 3500Kg
towing limit. Both are only any good for track running not real off road.
Look at the exposed suspension arms on the back of a RAV4.

I am not anti 4x4 as I run a Range Rover with winch as it is used off road.
I also drive a diesel estate everyday and get 55 MPG on local running and
60+ on a trip.I use the Range Rover for its designed purpose.
