Doaes anyone know of any companies offering 4WD hire WITH TOW bar
fitted, I need to hire something to pull boat in and out of water once
a year so a days hire is enough.

Ask a mate .. preferably one with a 4x4, or maybe ask at any boatyard if
they have lifting facilities..

Or, depending on where, how big, and what you want to pay, I could be
persuaded .. ;)

Boat Yard not an option, I wish to do this myself so original question still

hire most types of 4x4. Sit down before you discover their prices. One
problem you might come across is insurance - some van hire firms will
only hire things with towbars if you have a company (not private) motor
insurance policy that covers them - and another problem is tachographs,
because most proper 4x4s need a tacho if used to tow for business
purposes. Even if you don't need it for your application, it's another
headache for the hire companies.

Otherwise - sit down with yellow pages or google. Then buy a cheap
Rangey and sell it the next week - it may be cheaper.

just to clarify for own use i.e. none-business you need not be concerned
with the tacho however if you are have a recent car licence post 1/1/97
then you may fall foul of the weight restriction if the loaded weight of
your vehicle and trailer exceeds 3500kgs or .........well see for more info

thankfully it doesnt apply to me which is as well trying to understand the
regs is like plaiting fog

i would be intrested to know why a 4x4 would require a tachograph? i have driven vehicles with trailers and not had to comply with any tacho requirements? am i missing something.

It's fairly complicated:

covers it fully, but, (very simplified) if your maximum gross weight of
vehicle plus trailer exceeds 3.5t, and you're towing for business, you
are supposed to abide by EC drivers hours rules, even if you're driving
only in the UK. And that means having a tacho. Yes, there are some
exemptions, and some horribly-worded explanations, and VOSA doesn't know
its exhaust from its steering knuckle, but it's a reason for hire
companies, particularly of vehicles with a maximum gross weight (or
m.a.m. as I think we must now call it) of just less than 3.5t, to avoid
fitting towbars.

OK. I dunno any 4x4 places who hire with towbars as I have a Landrover
Discovery so don't need to hire one .. but for your suggested use maybe
buying an old RangeRover or Discovery with a towbar, using it and selling it
again later might be both simpler and cheaper. I would think hiring for
that purpose, unless you're known to the hirer, would be deemed reasonably
dangerous and liable to either complete loss or salt-water corrosion.

It may be worth you buying and keeping an old 4x4 on a SORN and renew
tax/mot for a week a year or however long it takes, and then reclaim unused
tax and re-SORN it .. ;)

I also know someone with a trailerable yacht who uses a hand winch to pull
the boat out of the water, without getting the car wet, a very viable option
so long as there is a reasonable anchorage point above a slipway.

OK, thanks so far for the suggestions, here are some more facts.

1. the total weight of boat + trailer is about 1800kgs so any hire vehicle
capable of pulling this is an option
2. It will not be going anywhere near salt water, in fact it will not even
get wet as we use lines to extend the distance between car and trailer
during launching and recovery. Also we have access to a tractor for
launching and recovery if required.

There must be somone somewhere who hires such vehicles, I have considered
buying and selling but I dont really want the hassle and I would rather pay
for a days hire if I could get hire locally Cumbria or Cheshire.

I think you've just answered your own question here?

If not, I have a 110 with an 8ton hydraulic winch if that's any use.
Available from Bolton (with me) for the price of diesel and a pint! :)

Given the price of 4x4 hire it may be sensible to think about buying a
cheap 4x4 for the job. My own boat is a bit too big to tow, but the
harbour where she is moored has several launching slips and I notice
that the majority of trailer/sailors use a Vauxhall Frontera. These are
very cheap because of their dreadful reputation. But if you use one
infrequently they may be right up your street.
