The Government website is useless regarding Mot exemptions, my series is now over 40 years old, I haven't made any modifications so it is now due for its exemption.

The site is all over the tax exemption but I need to clarify something please.

If I fill out a V112 form and take it to be sent off with my v5 to the post office for tax exemption does that then cover the mot as well?

The V112 seems to be a form that declares your vehicle is mot exempt to support tax exemption, however the form appears to be a declaration rather than an application,

ie. " my vehicle is mot exempt therefore I don't have to pay tax "'

Rather than, " this is an application for mot exemption "

Does V112 cover both? Thanks in advance

I can't recall it being difficult, except it's the April after the 40 years is when it becomes exempt.

I think I just brought the v5 to the post office and they did the rest, including receipt. The refund arrived soon after.

I didnt have to do anything. Dvla contacted me said it was now classed as historic, sent me a new v5 and told me to destroy the old one.

I just sent my V5 and the V112 with a covering letter to the DVLA Swansea and it was sorted in jig time. No histrionics or issues just 4 weeks later a new V5 arrived noting 'historic vehicle'.
When I received my Motor Tax Renewal I took relevant docs to PO and they processed there and then, no MoT required.

If you know your vehicle registration date then post it.
Are you trying to renew the tax? Has the mot expired?
with that info I can then probably answer this!

Afternoon, finally, this morning after a month my v5 came back, I'm confused, how do I know if it's now historic class, it literally looks exactly the same, there was no note or letter or anything with it, the only difference I can see is in the very bottom left hand corner of the first page the date on it Is 18/01/23 which looks as if it has at least been reissued, if I put my reg into government website it still says tax / mot due, what exactly am I looking for on this new v5 please to prove that someone has actually done anything with it?, if I was a less cautious person I could just assume that it's now tax/mot free and just go about my business, I would have thought that I would have some sort of notification to say it's been amended, thanks in advance

The taxation class would read historic, if it was historic.
It will always need a road fund license (road tax) to be driven on the road legally.
It may cost nothing, but it is still needed.

Just looking at it the class it still says private/ light goods (plg), why would they literally send me a new v5 with the same details on? and not return the old one , what a waste of time and money, It is definitely new because Dvla website says reissued on 18/01/23. I'm confused now I'm assuming they haven't re classed it but why haven't they sent me a letter explaining what they have or haven't done

I did it all through the post office, they told me it was mot, tax exempt from 1 January on the year after its 40th anniversary, they checked it and forwarded it, if I hadn't l read the new V5 closer I'd have just started driving and thought nothing more of it.

Is the tax free after April, or mot or both.? Post office have given me bad advice and Dvla haven't just sent old v5 with explanation they've reissued it and just put it in an envelope and sent it back?

Just to add - the mot rules are slightly different.
Hence the question - what is the registration date on the V5?

I have never had to do anything specific and the proof is on the DVLA site, once it is historic you still need to apply for road fund licence.
However it is free and you can do it online in a few secs. I take great delight on one day each year taxing 6 vehicles for nowt in one go, I even have vehicles that are in bits awaiting rebuild insured and taxed cos its free tax and adding to the multiple vehicle insurance is usually either free of peanuts, at least if they get stolen of destroyed they are insured

Ok, so my vehicle was registered in August 1982 which I now understand means it will be eligible after April 2023, not sure why the post office OKd it, Also I'm going to complain to the Dvla , they for some reason have sent me a new V5 with no explanation to why they have done this, if I hadn't have checked it over I could have at some point been driving with no MOT or tax when I wasn't able to do so. Has anyone got any idea why they would have done this, it's also now showing an additional previous owner, so it shows 9 instead of 8??

So, from the reg date (what ever day of the month it was registered) in August 2022, it did not require an mot - if it hasn’t been extensively modified.
It still needs to be roadworthy, and you may have to fill in a declaration saying it is roadworthy and hasn’t been modified when you tax it. It also will need to be insured.
From 1st April 2023, you will be able to get free road tax.
If you have a current road tax on 1st April then you can get a rebate on the remaining tax - if you go about it the right way.
You still need valid road tax to use it or park on the road, but it is at no cost

If your V5 has on the front of it near the bottom, vehicle declared date of manufacture #### then this can make things completely different.

I guess if you applied after April the v5 May have said historic vehicle
As from Aug 2022 you don’t need an mot and don’t need to do anything as I read the guidance
But for tax exemption you need to sign the v112 to declare it does not need an ,or and take it with you as below to PO with your v5 job done

It may well have changed recently - so I may not be correct. But last year, and 2 years ago, it wasn’t possible to do a tax class change on line.
It is so simple at a post office - so just do it there. My friendly village post office man always knows what to do, and just sorts it. Don’t even need to buy a stamp!
You can also send in your documents and apply for road tax and tax class change, but who knows how long that will take? Will they deny any knowledge of receiving it?

once the tax class is historic, then online is possible for the yearly renewal.
