Hi all,
had this intermittently for a while now, more on than off recently though.
Hawkeye can't even connect to the ABS ECU - tried all the options, so maybe it's that.
Brake fluid level is fine, brakes are fine, brake light switch is new (replaced as a precaution).
Whereabouts is ABS ECU located in a 2002 TD4?
Is it part of the pump modulator? (I can see where that is)

Thanks

Ordered replacement ABS Modulator and while waiting for it to arrive I thought I'd take one last look at the existing ABS modulator. Removed cable connector and gave it a liberal coating of WD40 before replacing it. I then took a rubber mallet and proceeded to tap all the way around the outside of the modulator. Went out in it the next day and it was a while before I realised it but the 4 Amigos weren't on. They have stayed off ever since. Must have been a sticking valve in the Modulator. Useful one to tuck away in the memory bank for future reference. :)
Will definitely be trying that first!

I've had a problem with 1 of the electrical connectors rusting up on my Wabco modulator. It looks to be an afterthought wire and just hangs there - at angles to let water in. The actual ECU for the Wabco system is safely tucked up under the drivers seat, so comms to it are not a problem.

Before spending to much money on it, I'd be tempted to get a 2nd device to check the codes - maybe an indie garage who won't charge you if they can't connect to it as well.

If the ABS modulator has a large black box on the side, with a thick bunch cables plugged in, then the ECU is integrated into the module. If your driveshafts don't have ABS rings, then the ECU is on the modulator. ;)

I'd be tempted to check the VIN number rather than strip the hub/driveshaft to check of the existence of an ABS ring ;)

Not sure what the VIN ranges are (I'm usually interested in the YA bit) on mine but a search/google should find ranges (for a MY03 presumably, maybe MY02 it should be obvious).

A vin check is easier, but a quick visual inspection of the hub carrier will provide the needed information. The ABS sensors are in different places, and I'm pretty sure the ABS sensor plugs are different colours too, the earlier systems being off white, and the later being blue.

A 2002 Td4 will have the Teves Mk25 I believe - and will be old enough to have the ABS with reluctor rings on the end of the drive shafts (similar to what I have just been working on for my 2001 1.8 FL1). More on the ABS systems from the workshop manual here: https://workshop-manuals.com/landrover/freelander-a/brakes/description/slip_control_system/

To answer those two specific questions, yes, the ECU is part of the modulator, and the ECU modulator is in the engine compartment.

Four amigos? What lights are lit in your case? ABS, HDC and TC (all amber) + another?

That'd be logical - hopefully something straightforward. Worst would be a wiring break - which can a nightmare to track down.

Just an update, the warning lights went off some time after posting and haven't come back on - yet...
All seems to work ok including HDC.
Probably an intermittent connection at the ECU/ABS pump.

Update - started the car today for the first time in months. Started great but handbrake stuck on. I've freed it but now the 3 amigos + handbrake light are back on.
Hawkeye tells me there are 2 faults: 1st is "unknown fault", 2nd is "Internal fault". Very helpful.

That's annoying - I am not sure how to advise either? I've had "fun" with the three amigos over the years I have had my FL1, but it has never been with the brake warning light as well. Brake switch issue may be? Does the Hawkeye give you live data on what information the Yaw and wheel speed sensors are showing? This can be invaluable for fault finding.

I've tried to find a 4 Amigos thread on here from a while back that I'm sure wasn't something so major as an ECU fault, but I can't find it. sure it wasn't the hand brake - but I also remember at the time that I'd never have though the fault was that - so could be!

Apparently there's no feed to one of the ABS sensors but the wiring seems to be ok, although it's about to be checked by someone who is good at that kind of thing.
LR tell me the ABS unit part no is SRB500250, and they would be very happy to sell me one for £1700 + vat. (we both laughed).
Luckilly there are plenty on Ebay starting at around £25.

lol, that's a bit like when my IRD went. I rang the local LR dealer and asked them how much for an IRD and VCU (knowing it was very very unlikely to be an option). His response was $7,000 (£3,500) but he followed this in serious tone with "when would you like to book it in?" - it was only me rolling around in laughter/pain.
