I have a 1995 4.6 V8 which won't start. My wife drove it on to the drive, locked it and came in the house.Next morning I tried to start it but the engine just turned over but woudn't fire. The RAC came and said it was flooded. After spraying some cold start and cleaning the plugs (he didn't) he got it started. My wife went to town and cameback and locked it. Next day at 0400hrs and with a heavely pregnant daughter in law we tried to start it and the same thing happened. This time the RAC couldn't start it and didn't know what the fault was. It seems it would start when warm but not when it has been stood for a while. I would appreciate any ideas on what it could be before I put it in a garage and get ripped off. Many thanks in advance.
The 'Check Engine' warning light is on when ignition operated.

PS:The daughter in law had a baby boy.

Yes there is a spark at the plugs and it has fuel etc.

I must apologise to wills. There is no spark at the plugs even though the RAC told me there was but I have re-checked myself.

No it didn't smoke but I have just discovered that there is no spark at the plugs even though the RAC told me there was.

Hi Tonyen,

Do you have a spark at the coil lead to the dizzy ?

Disconnect the lead in the middle if the Distributor cap.

Try a spark plug in the end of the lead and get someone to turn the engine over.

It should spark.

If you have a dicky heart like me, make sure you use well insulated pliers to hold the plug or you may not be here to finish the job.

If it sparks the fault could be dizzy cap, rotor etc.

In my experience only use genuine spares or you will waste your money.
Non genuine rotors crack and short out, dizzy caps arc inside etc., leads should be at least Genuine Lucas or better.

If you have a problem with no spark at all it could be all sorts of things but I have a check list I used on my 3.5 if would help

Good Luck

Hi Fred! thanks for your input. I have tried all the usual fault finding but can't find the fault. I am putting it in a garage now as I am disabled and it is difficult for me to go any further with it. Thanks anyway.
Kind regards.

Hi Tony,

Let me know how you get on.
I hope it's not dizzy .... EXPENSIVE ... but you can rebuild.

If you have problems standing and bending over the engine, you are wise to get someone to do it for you as the bolt holding the dizzy in is rather difficult to reach and if you have disturbed the timing it will have to be reset preferably with a timing light.

I have a replacement hip and a heart problem so I too have to take it a bit steady and had to get someone to replace my fuel pump.

I wish you luck and hope it's not too expensive.

Regards Fred
