ok so the other day i fitted two new core plugs to the 98 range rover 4.0 se i brought. filled the cooling system up no leaks started it and it got up to half way on the temp gage ans seemd to stay there. but i could here a leak that was under pressure. but saw no water comeing out.

took it for a drive to test everything an after about 10 mins the gauge started to climb past half way. so back at home got out and the engine felt very hot compared to what it should be.

- there was sligtly warm water coming out the bottom of the rad which seemed to be round a black plug in the bottom.

- there was no water left in the header tank

- the top pipe from the rad to the engine was stupidly hot

i cant think what it can be

i thought thermostat wasnt opening but i can pour water in the top hose of the rad and it will cause the level to rise in the engine which shows that it flowwing throught the engine.

but what really gets me is some of the water is barly warm yet the engines overheating?

Airlock / knackered pump / stuck thermostat / blocked rad / Viscous fan / any combination. More seriously knackered head gaskets / shifted liners. Fill it very slowly with the engine running until it's up to level. Thermostat is a cheap replacement.

You say you could hear a leak. This would be air being expelled i take it. If you have a leaky head gasket and the air is being expelled past the filler cap because of over pressuring then that is one problem. To find out take the vehicle to a garage that has a static system tester, most good ones should have one of these. They will pressurise the system and look for leaks. If there are no leaks detected then remove the plugs and look for one or more that are clean. Those are the cylinders leaking water and an head gasket will need replacing. It is very unusual for core plugs to come out unless the engine has frozen at some time, as it takes a serious amount of pressure to dislodge a core plug. Usually the only thing that can do this is expanding ice.

cheers for the replys. and i dont think its head gasket casue the leaking water isnt coming from the block. it as coming out from near the bottom of the rad.

i had the rad and thermostat out today, removed the drain plug from the bottom of the rad and it a layer of rusty sediment at the bottom about 1cm thick feels like sand but im gessing it from where the core plugs have been exposed it caused rut to get into the system.

tested the thermostat and when cold its open slightly as i could blow air through it just, and when hot it didnt move. so ill order a new one of them this week.

also the retern hose fom the rad to the header tank seemed to be blocked but i freed it.

would i be right in saying that the water pump is most likly to be knakered with the crap thats in the system?
thanks again for te help :)
