It's good that nobody got hurt though i'm affraid the problem is not solved cos it's possible that the alarm sounder which burned out to be still triggered by something most probably some short circuit and the smell was from the sounder.... inspect the sounder if it doesnt have burning marks on it but if it has yoiu'll have to check further
 
Thereis a 12v supply to the sounder, assuming u have the factory fitted BBUS sounder unit to charge the enclosed Nicad battery, a fault with the charging or the sound generating electronics would certainly overheat the unit and possibly cause a fire.

So all you have to do is replace the sounder unit if you can find one somewhere.
