Hi

I recently bought a 1996 300Tdi disco, the plan is to use the car for some greenlaning and moderate offroad. Its got 128k miles which appear to be backed up by service history and MOT's.

When I first bought the car it was a bit down on power, but since then I've cleared out the fuel lines and rear filter bowl, engine oil + all filters changed and it would be fair to say the old girl now pulls great.

Have done around 800 miles in the car, and the engine has developed a very noticable vibration at mid range rpm's. Its at its worst at 2400, and it gets worse under load and also I think its worse when the engine is warm. Not propshaft related as it happens at particular engine speeds, but in any case I've checked all the joints and the shafts are fine. Once you get to 3000rpm and above, the engine seems smooth enough, but these midrange revs seem rough, even for a Tdi.

Can't see any play in the engine mountings, nor do they seem collapsed. Gearbox mountings seem a bit soft but nothing is touching anywhere. Crankshaft damper/pulley *looks* OK and seems solid enough when levered with a pry-bar, etc.

I'm quite baffled by this, and was wondering if anyone has come across anything like this? I should add we've got another 300Tdi disco which doesn't vibrate in this way - you can feel it through the floor!

This vibration was not present when I bought the vehicle. I hope the seller hasn't thrown in some STP etc, to mask a bottom end problem, which would all be flushed out by now, me having done an oil change. Its a bit worrying that it seems worse when hot.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions :)

does it still vibrate when you put your foot on the clutch,if not could be clutch related. if not i would suspect a main bearings or crankshaft thrustwasher problem giving too much end float. is oil pressure ok on start up,hope this is of help.
