Hi, I'm ticking off the usual overheating issues one by one, and will only focus on the thermostat here.
I tested my current 88deg stamped Thermostat in water and it is only fully open at 97+ deg C (see photos)
Then tested an out of the box 88deg stamped Circoli thermostat and found the same.
The workshop manual has conflicting info. In the repair section (attached) it states that it needs to be OPEN between 85 and 89.
Convention states that the stamped rating of 88 should be the temp the thermostat only starts to open.
The Circoli for example states "Once the temperature of the coolant rises to between 180 and 195 F (82 - 91 C), the thermostat starts to open, allowing fluid to flow through the radiator. By the time the coolant reaches 200 to 218 F (93 - 103 C), the thermostat is open all the way.
QUESTION - Is the manual wrong in the testing procedure, or in the specified thermostat? Do we actually need a lower rated Thermostat like this 78 deg one in the 300tdi?
