Chaps, have a 300tdi auto '95 with 105,000 miles. Started to notice a noise from the gearbox when it changes into top and revs drop to 12 to 1500 rpm and don't happen under load or acceleration. It sounds metallic and twangy (not the best description) however it goes as soon as I pick up revs or it changes down. Checked fluid and levels, nicely clear and pink, smells ok and correct level. Had a good search but couldn't find anything. Any idea's?

Thanks,

John.

Hi John, there is a heat shield on the left (passenger) side of the gearbox, which sometimes causes this - have a look underneath and check it out.

Thanks for the reply biglad, just noticed it's absolutely tipping down outside so I'll be checking that tomorrow. Bit of a habit of mine to hear a noise, expect the worst, descend into gloom and not check obvious things first. Here's hoping, I'll let you know tomorrow.

Cheers

John.

Just been out and checked, had a good poke about but no heatshield obvious and nothing rattled as I went so looks like a deep breath and off to the autobox specialist later in the week. Gloom.
