Problems with not going up the box past second gear , oil level high on dip stick when checked , not sure if overfilled or something blocked, going to change oil and filter , read a posissible problem with governor , valves o rings , blocked at rear of box that you can get at any suggestions please or do we think its terminal cheers Dave

governor is responsible for upshifts they can wear or stick ,was common issue after oil change usually better once up to temp, but ensure oil levels correct can be quite tricky to check with dip stick ensuring your looking at correct level and not oil dragged up the stick so check both sides

Yes , checked when neutral and through gear suspect oil not circulating or may have been overcooked by previous owner, anyway not going up past second gear

The auto box on a D1 is very easy to overheat when off roading on the standard oil cooler. I noticed the plastic tray which sits directly under the cooler pipes was completely melted when I first brought mine. This was purely down to how hot the cooler pipes got at some point in their life.

I recently fitted a gearbox oil temp gauge with the sender unit located towards the bottom of the sump.
The temp in this country barely gets above 50 degrees, but in Morocco last month, was up to 100 degrees when out in the desert, and that was with an Alisport uprated gearbox oil cooler with 3x the cooling efficiency over a standard one.

Anybody stripped a governor in situ , ??

yes once t/box is off and rear housing from auto(your better undoing breather pipe banjo bolt) ,park brake pawl etc can be removed and govenor hub with park brake wheel pulled off,you dont need to drain oil to do it
