I have searched the threads but cannot find an answer to this question, Can anyone help?
Just fitted a 300 tdi into my old 1990 defender 2.5 td.
Great, everything seems to be working fine..........except one thing!!
The temperature gauge on the defender reads rather high, almost to the top of the white section. All seems ok though no water leakage, not boiling etc.
I have been told that the temp sender unit on the 300 tdi engine may not be compatable with the temp gauge on the defender.
Has anyone come accross this before?? If so, does anyone know what gauge i can now fir to the landy to get it to show the correct temperature???
Hopefully this is the cause of the high temp readings I am getting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the sender on a ti and a guage from a 2.5td will cause the guage to read high. see if you cn pike a guage from a tdi or just live with it.

Thanks for the info mudhunter.
I was hoping that this was the cause as this is cheap to fix having just spent a small fortune on a 300tdi engine etc.
All I have to do now is find a gauge from a tdi

Thanks for that.
So, does anyone know if a td5 water tem gauge is comapatale with a 300tdi water temp sender unit??
Just fit a td sender, it fits ok.
Delete that statement, I missread it as 200tdi Dooh...
The 200 accepts a td sender so have a look at it, might work..

I have already been down this route. The TD/200TDI senders are the same thread and interchangeable but do not fit the 300 so that route is out. You could get adaptors made up from a hydraulics supplier but this would cost you more than a new gauge. The other alternative is a 300 gauge new or second hand but this just gives a general indication of whether you are likely to overheat or not. The best option in my opinion is to fit an aftermarket gauge which will come with a matching sender and give you an accurate read out of the actual temperature that you are running at. I fitted one by TIM but VDO are also good. Most of these gauges have senders which will fit straight into the 300 but they also often include a number of adaptors to fit other common sizes.

Just an update, Went down to my local landy workshop and they tested the engine temp for me. Although the gauge read hot the temperature was just 90 c so it is the gauge/sender unit that are incomaptable. I just needed to confirm this.
So now it's off to the shops (again) to get an aftermarket gauge.
Thanks for the input from you guys, I was beginning to worry about having to dig deep into an already dwindling wallet ( or try to pich some of HER cash to pay for more expensive repairs.
Now all i need to do is get the dead short on the headlamp flasher unit ( a right pain in the a**e) then sort out some accoustic matting so that maybe I can actually hear a radio. Then hopefully that will be all.......UNTIL the next problem arises, which i doubt will be very long.

a aftermarket guage will look silly, as has been mentioned numerous times above find a 200/300 guage

Why would an aftermarket gauge look silly. The TIM gauge that i used has a black bezel with the same shape as the Landy ones. The only difference is the full display as opposed to the red and white markings of the original.

if it's different looking to an original item then i think it will look silly
