3.5 V8 Efi Ticky Tappets

Hi, brand new to all this forum stuff, and Landrovers! All looks good though.
Got a 1989 3.5 Efi. Need to replace the valley gasket some time soon. Whilst doing this am I right in assuming I can access the pushrods/tappets reasonably easily? Do I need to replace them?
There is a ticking noise while the engine is running, not always there. Local garage said if it does it when it's cold then stops when it warms up it'll be a tappet. Thing is it doesn't always do it and ticking can randomly stop with engine hot or cold. I park on a slope at night and it doesn't do it when I first start her in the morning. Could it be a piston ring?
I havn't really got a clue about engines and I don't want to buy and fit parts when there's no need, much as I love buying parts for the old girl!
 
Thanks for the reply Ed. I don't want to adjust tappets, i just need to replace if it is one of them ticking. But the ticking seems to be worse when she's warmed up. Does anything else cause that sort of noise? Is it all easily accessible with the inlet manifold removed? Would really appreciate a reply!
 
Have you done recent oil change as this will make a difference. To get the tappets out I am reasonbly sure you would have to take the cyl head off.
 
Yeah, been changing all oils regularly. I tried some engine cleaner with the last oil change, a few people said it might clean/loosen up a sticking tappet, but no.
 
OOOh - don't be using engine cleaner in your V8
Washes all the carbon deposits orf and will make the bugger noisy - tolerances were never that good in the first place so needs some deposits to keep it quiet !
Stick 20/50 oil in it - that will shut it up

where can you get a good quality 20-50 from? i see my local motor factors selling it for £10 or £11 a gallon, that don't say quality at that price? or does it matter if its changed at 3000 intervals??

Find Lucas High Spec 20/50 20w50 Racing Oil 2.5 US gallons on eBay within Exhausts, Performance Tuning, Accessories, Motorcycle Parts Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 29-Nov-07 09:46:58 GMT)

Give Phil a ring and I think he charges about £54 inc. delivery for 2 cans when not sold through ebay - that's nearly 20 litres so enough for 3 oil changes (almost)
