Welcome to landyzone.:welcome2:

It depends what you call unreliable and expensive. It also depends on what model you buy, how often you get it serviced, where you get it serviced or if you do it yourself. A discovery 1 tdi costs about £15 for a filter kit and another £10 for the oil. Service it yourself and you get the whole job done for £25. Take the same vehicle to a main dealer and you can kiss £150-£200 goodbye.

Parts for discovery 1's and 2's are cheap enough. Basic maintenance is also easy enough for a novice to do it themselves. There are good ones out there aswell as bad ones.

My landy is far less costly to maintain than my alternative chav mobile (vauxhall astra) and yet it has a much harder life.

Any car can be a moneypit. If you buy a good vehicle to start with and then keep it properly maintained it can save you lots of expense in the long run.

What model are you after (disco 1,2 3 or 4) what engine are you after (petrol or diesel) how many seats (5 or 7)?, how many doors? whats your budget? what do you want to use it for? Without knowing a bit more about your requirements we aren't really going to be able to answer your questions.
