hi guys how do i stop the crankshaft from moving so i can remove and fit a new starter dog? now everytime i turn the shaft will move along.i also tried engaging gears and putting bricks behind the truck to stop it from moving but that wasnt very effective either. any ideas? i really want to hand crank the engine!!

hmm but where should i aim the impact driver at? since its one big nut!but in the mean time i will try 4wd high with bricks on all wheels =]. is there a way to stop the flywheel by putting a screwdriver somewhere?read that its possible to do that as well

Is it petrol or diesel? Diesels take effort to crank over with no decompressors on them.

Still very handy to have the option of crank start :)

Cant remember exactly what youve got on that but if you remove the starter you will be able to lock the ringgear with a suitable chisel. Ther may be other ways to poke something into the gear, sometimes there are timing holes etc.
I often use a large stilson wrench on the pulley and wedge on the ground. Try and post a pic of exactly what youve got on your motor.

the nut shown is where the starter dog should be.so i have to remove it.in the 2nd pic i found there is this hole at the rear of the crankshaft, which i think is where the flywheel is.isit possible to put a screwdriver in it and somehow it will lock the flywheel? its a diesel btw

Not sure about the hole, if it goes into the bellhousing and you can lock something in the ringgeear it will work.
You will remove that nut easily if you lock a stilson onto the pulley.
As posted by samc88 you will struggle to start a diesel by hand without decompressors.

hi guys I tried going to 4wd hi 4th gear but still can't get it out as the crankshaft turns slightly with the nut.like a flex/spring.is there a way to lock the crankshaft?

use a socket or decent ring spanner on the nut.
turn engine with tee bar or spanner untill it touches the nearside chassis.
ensure there are no brake pipes or wiring under the contact point of bar / spanner.
place a sheet of heavy cardboard or 1/8th plywood etc. to protect the rad.
pull engine stop out to prevent starting.
place gearstick in neutral and give the engine a flick over on the starter.
repeat after socket / spanner has fallen off.
ensure spaectators have no appendages in engine bay while carrying out procedure.
