Probably a silly question to all you how know your stuff, but.. if i wanted to run stronger half shafts in a S3 that happen to be 24 spline, would it work if i fitted a 24 spline diff center into the standard s3 diff, using the standard crown wheel etc? ie what part of the diff makes it 4.7 or 3.54:1?
Thanks for your help

You should be able to bolt in a complete 24spline diff from a discovery BUT it will give you 3.5:1 ratio. The thing that makes the ratio is the crown wheel & pinion. I'm pretty sure you would need to change both but I'm a little confused as to what you have at the moment and what you hope to achieve??

Thanks for your reply. At the moment i have a standard 88 and have a set of 24spline half shafts for a series vehicle (similar to those made by ashcrofts) and 1 24spline diff is available locally to me (they don't come up that often). so if i had 2 24 spline diffs i'd be up for swapping both, but as only one is available i was wondering if i can fit the 24spline diff center into my standard series diff using the series crown wheel and pinion and maintaining the 4.7 ratio, hopefully that makes sens, and cheers for your help.

Don't think it's that simple, though I could be wrong!

I believe a major difference between 'early' and 'later' diffs is whether they're imperial or metric measurements, so it's likely that the hole sizes and PCD's are slightly different .. and slightly may be too much! Have a look on the Ashcrofts site, http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php and maybe give them a call or email. Similarly, Nigel Barker https://www.megasquirt-v8.co.uk/diff_upgrade.php is a great engineer and fan, so very helpful .. :)

Of course, @jamesmartin might also know and reply if he sees this ... ;)

t sounds complicated and creating differing torque inside the diff.
