Anyone got a good source of cheap tyres as above, pref cornwall way? just opened overdraft and credit card bills on same day and got serious shock......PASS THE VALIUM

Anyway, one of my fronts on the auto is below legal....do they have to be replaced in pairs to keep diffs happy?Or can I just cheapskate around it and do the one?

Any advice?

try tyre monkey it's an online company thou you'll still need to get some1 to fit them, but prices r really good.

thanks guys, geoff harris has been helpful with arcane old tractor tyres before but I didnt know he'd price match!Nice one!

Now,this having to put two new tyres on an axle thing,to alledgedly save the diffs...whats up with that?Old wives tale?Or can I go ahead and just replace one at a time,as finances allow?Do tell.....:)

You should replace tyres in pairs on one axle(so I was told by my tyre fitter) but if you want to take the risk its up to you.

I know that on some Jeep Cherokee's they had a problem with the centre diff going bang due to tyre probs ........ ie fitting just 1 new one etc etc ...... but havent heard of probs with Disco's TBH

I used to work in a garage (qualified mechanic) and part of my job was fitting tyres and we never bother doing 2 tyres if only one needed doing on that axle ........... you try to justify it to the customer!

Personnaly i always do both on same axle but thats just down to the tyres wearing out at roughly the same time :p

I have no doubt however that i will soon be corrected if i'm deemed wrong :p

Surely the fact that it has a diff means you dont have to change the tyres in pairs (assuming you are refering to a slight difference in diameter), when cornering one wheel goes round faster that the other but the diff ensures that the wheel can rotate at different speeds. It must be the same if you have different tyre pressures.

I put my spare (about 25mm of tread on it) on the same axle as a tyre (same pattern and size) with 8mm of tread on it and apart from a slight tendency to drive in a circle it's still fine 6 months later. No diff prob's whatsoever.

i read somewhere that it only affects 4 wheel drive cars without a central diff ( cavalier 4 x 4 and peugeot 405 4 x 4 etc ) cos it "winds "the transmission up .

Hello Mate
I get my tyres from MJB at Newquay ( on industrial estate opp MACkY D'S) I have just fitted some insa turbo dakars which are amazing and only £55 each fitted.

thanks all.:)

I just negotiated a set of 5 part worn from combellack breakers, roche, for 15 quid each, not sure if rims included, but since I got 2 x300tdi to shoe it pays to have spares around. However I can see some new ones as soon as bank allows,so 55 for insa fitted sounds 'andsome:D

grateful to all who helped

shocksi:)
