Possible Causes for My Issue?

After running for 30+ minutes from a cold start, my 2013 FL2 SD4 automatic has an issue when stopped in "drive" — the revs begin to drop, and it almost stalls at traffic lights or in heavy traffic. I’ve also noticed that the revs flutter occasionally when the gearbox shifts up during acceleration.

Interestingly, the problem stops when I select neutral, but it does still happen in reverse and has even caused the car to stall while reversing. I've tried switching to manual gear selection, but the issue persists.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I can tell you there's something wrong with the sound of that engine. It sounds like a bearing on an idler or tensioner is failing. It shouldn't sound rough and grinding like that at all.

Hi John.
Hope you are good, yes i can hear that too, do you think the stalling maybe the crank sensor or it's wiring.

Thanks for the advice I will check the belt/bearings and post an update. It might also be sounding worse because the revs are dropping and it's nearly stalling although I think you're right something doesn't sound quite right.

Annoying I've only just bought this Freelander after wanting one for ages so I can't compare how it sounded before.

Do you know if a failing crank sensor would show up on a odb reader or is there any other way of checking if it's failed?

I know a friend who has a reader so can get that checked.
 
I would take a look at the transmission, if the problem occurs only on drive and reverse. With sounds like that you should be getting some error codes so you should definitely check them out.

It definitely shouldn't sound like. The engine is almost inaudible from inside, or should be.

I think you nailed it.

After checking with an OBD reader while the car was running, the EGR valve data was off. I wasn't able to check the live data when the car was stalling to confirm, but I'm assuming the valve was stuck open letting too much exhaust gas into the engine, causing it to stall. I've since had an EGR delete done a few days ago, and... touch wood, it hasn't stalled since.
