Sport 2012 TDV6 - How much does a service of the transmission cost?

Only got the car last month second hand. It's sitting at 104,000 miles. It has a full history of Land Rover servicing with the main dealer during it's warranty and then with an indie. I don't think the transmission has ever been serviced. It's MOT is due at the end of March. I've scheduled in to a local indie at the beginning of March to get an MOT check, and full service of the transmission. They said they'd be able to change the filter on it for me and a change of the fluid. Just wondering how much should I be expecting to pay from other people's experience?

I’d expect u to get a bill roughly around £500 +, also if I may add look into getting a full warranty that includes the crankshaft

In my experience, if you have to ask how much simple maintenance costs on a Range Rover, you've bought the wrong vehicle.

Expect to pay an average of £1500 + per year on maintenance, if it's less, you're lucky.

You shouldn’t make assumptions from your own experience.
 
Because I didn’t ask for a lecture on the price of owning a car. I’m curious to see what others In the same position paid for. Everyone has a different experience.

If everyone has different experiences as you say, it follows that assumptions will be made based on a persons experience, that is the way of the world.
 
Personally I do all my own work on my D3 , must admit on the RRS it has more complicated suspension that when it goes wrong can lead into serious money if I can’t spanner urself

also need to ensure the timing belts / oil pump , rear fuel belt etc have been done, think it’s every 7 x years / 105,000 miles , apologises can’t remember off the top of my head on the SDV6, plus the twin turbos

alas many will buy a RRS without realising the costs , ie set of tyres £600 or to have the timing belts etc done, expect around £1k

honestly we’re not giving u a lecture just friendly advise of what to look out for and with such a complicated vehicle is best to get a warranty

lastly if u don’t mind me adding , plse ensure u take it to a reputable garage when u have the gearbox done, it has to be done in a particular order and if it’s not done to the letter they can seriously stuff the gearbox up

Most of this has already been done to the value of £1600... I'm aware of how expensive the vehicle is... I'm just wondering if anyone that has owned a RRS like mine, has had their transmission serviced before, and how much it costed them... thanks for the advice.... :)

great it’s been done, may i ask is it’s a 6 or 8 x speed plse , if it’s the 6 x speed will be the same gearbox as in my D3

also if they replace the filter make sure they don’t fit a metal transmission sump plate as there’s reports of them leaking , should be the plastic one as per original , there’s a lot of different opinions with regards to flushing a transmission , personally for me I’d never get mine flushed , but again there’s different views on that , also ensure they use the correct oil

as a guide , ZF6 lifeguard oil is around £25 per litre , imagine u would need around 5 x litres , normally get around 4.5 litres out , if it’s the 8 x speed , ZF8 lifeguard that’s around £33.00 per litre

Don’t wish to sound condescending just things that I’ve learnt over the years and if I may plse ensure the garage comes recommend as heard so many horror stories of garages messing gearboxes up

I've never had a transmission leak... The problem with the rrs is that the crossmember under the box is in the way of the filter dropping cleanly away.. The filter is lowered and the neck has to be cut off, the replacement filter is separate from the pan. Otherwise you have to jack the engine. What you gain from buying the simple one piece filter is lost in the extra labour of jacking the bloody lump up and running the risk of squeezing the filter up and into place..... The cross member is a part of the frame...

No worries. I appreciate the advice. It’s an 8 speed with the rotary dial. They are certified JLR specialists and all of the reviews I’ve read about them are positive. When I was on the phone to one of the mechanics he seemed more than knowledgable about the vehicle. I live in Northern Ireland so our options are very limited to who we take them to. When I was on the phone to one of the mechanics he was more than knowledgable on the vehicle.

Its not going in until March so what to look out for is good info to me. Should I be looking to get a full service done on the car again? The dealer I purchased this from actually owned the car before me and had a full service done November, before I purchased it.

Brake fluid,
Gearbox,
Transfer box,
Front diff,
Rear diff,
Anti freeze.
Fuel filter,
air filter,
cabin filter.
Oil and filter.. I would look through its history and make a decision that suits you best also. Prevention and so on:D

Air and fuel filters are mostly done every other oil change unless you drive in very dusty conditions.
If there is no history of transfer box or diff oils being done, maybe consider it.

I really prefer to do it myself,after taking the BMW for its MOT and finding the oil leak from the timing chain tensioner,(thank God I was driving instead of the Boss) I did an oil and filter change. The car has a full service history and unless they managed to replace the corrosion on the filter housing then the plastic filter cap has never been off.:mad::rolleyes:. The son in law said he gets it all the time in his garage if they don't have the tool to undo the cap without breaking it.

This is a stealer we are talking about...almost nothing will have have been done, let alone properly.
